The best Chippy in Donny area ...
« on November 09, 2021, 06:25:38 am by Donnywolf »
... would or could be an interesting Thread - everyone seems to have a favourite so lets see what they are
I ask because I saw " Doncaster area Chippy in Top 10 in Yorkshire" said Yorkshire Post and I immediately thought  "Fish Bits" where I barely have a less than great Fish n Chip experience but NO it was actually Auckley Friery where I barely have a less than great Fish n Chip experience

If I am staying local I opt for Chips n Things in Moorends where I barely have a less than great Fish n Chip experience

There must be some equally "good" that are waiting to be "outed" on here lol so whats your "go to Chippy"
Realise I opened Thread called "best Chippy" and have 3 which I cant "split" personally

Wolfie, if you are ever out Selby way try The Frying Nemo at Carlton on the Selby road from Snaith they are very good, Not exactly the Doncaster area but worth going if out this way.
I am not expert on many things, but fish and chips I am.

Another vote for Whitbys here.
Their steak pie is also tremendous.

Hands up all those that remember their parents having a chip pan when they were kids that you had to melt the dripping in the pan before you could get the chips frying

After writing in the other thread about healthy eating i shouldn't be replying to this! Last time i went there the Auckley Friary was good, although the last time i had anything from a chip shop was walking back home on Referendum Night, ( did you like how i got on to Brexit ).

Not been back home for years but a while ago for me it in my local area it was Roberts Golden Cod on York Road and a lad i knew ran a chippy called Martin's Plaice off York Road and he then ran the chippy on Rowena Drive in Scawsby. Martin Bilby he was called.

Not been to a chippy back in Donny for years now.

One of the only things I really miss not being in the UK is fish and chips. Not quite in Donny, but has to be Bell Lane Fisheries in Ackworth. and not to start another debate, it has to be Haddock not Cod.

Great idea for a thread DW , something cheerful instead of our usual monitoring of the depressing sh1te going on.
Is Rothwells on Copley Road still going ?
not been down there for years.

Is that the little one on the corner?

I thought Rothwells was the one that used to be opposite the market near to the Castle pub?

Again, nothing to do with Donny but one of the few highlights I discovered whilst living in Hull was the Papa's chippy they have. Mint.

For Donny - I'd go with Fish Bits!

On the corner of Copley Road, at the market end.

Yes Rothwells is still going strong. We went in their restaurant recently. It was excellent.
The chip shop near me in Armthorpe is poor.
Best I've had is Mother Hubbard's in Scarborough, or Quayside in Whitby

No it's not.
That is now a sandwich shop/cafe called Shakespeares.
Rothwells is near the Castle pub as someone said earlier.

Really!
That shows how long it is since I bothered going into Donny.
How long is it since the chip shop moved then.

Don't know.
Was surprised when I saw it was a sandwich shop myself!

Rothwells didn't move - they had two branches, one in the marketplace and one on Copley Road.

The Copley Road site is now a bakery called Shakespeares, the market branch is still open.

Harrys at Dunsville or Fish Bits for me.

Fishbits is never the answer. It's cheap and OK but overall a bit bleh.

On a tangent but related note. Chippies up here in Newcastle don't sell Chicken and Mushroom pies, heathens

Not Donny but the chippy outside Rochdale's ground is the best I've had.

Also dabbled a bit in the Mexican takeaway as I recall. Shared a taxi with him once after a Billy Pearce show at Pastures Lodge. Random fact.

Our chippy used to be shite, but it's great now. The owners used to replace frier after frier, blaming them for the lack of customers. Then they started buying better quality fish and chips and they became the best in the village!

Golden Cod in Armthorpe is very good.  Whitby's also worth a visit.

I still like Rothwells best, though Fish Bits is pretty good.

Not such a fan of Whitbys, not bad food but I don't like that it's a chain and I prefer veg oil to dripping.

Papas is also a chain, I've tried it in Cleethorpes and it's pretty good.

Further afield, it's difficult to find good Fish n Chips in bloody London but the Two Brothers in Finchley is excellent. Close to the station, it has a posh restaurant which does seafood way beyond just fish and chips but great fish and chips and they have a fish bar takeaway for the classic experience.

If you're ever in York, Millers are very good. They have a pop up restaurant in Parliament street when the Chrismas market and things like that are on.
