I can't believe nobody's mentioned Mary Hopkin.

No taste, some people....

Awful, predictable, manufactured dirge. But if you like her then that's all that matters.

What do you mean by predictable & awful?

Predictable like:-

Shirley Bassey,
Cilla Black,
Dionne Warwick,
Diana Ross,
Barbara Streisand,
Carol Carpenter,
Carol King,
Whitney Houston, need I go on?

The only one from that ‘small off the top of my head group at this tome of night’ that comes close to, imo, Adele is Carole Carpenter who, like Adele, wrote & sang the majority of their songs.

This woman is a credit to the British music industry for gawd’s sake.

But hey, what do I know. I’ll leave all the accolades to those in the music award business that have showered this artiste with so many awards I can’t begin to recall, plus, & always more pertinent, the praise & recognition she has had heaped upon her from her peers within her own industry.

Still, what do those ‘plonkers’ know up against the ‘musical giants’ on this forum eh?

Colin, it's Karen Carpenter, and you're right, she did write her own music, along with her brother, and her voice was fantastic.

The other female singer I really rated from my era was Mama Cass Elliot.

Now I doubt that you'll be aware of how they both died at an early age, but I've always thought that if Karen Carpenter had eaten Mama Cass's ham sandwich, they'd both still be alive.

Cass Elliot died in the same Flat that Keith Moon died in a few years ealier, both aged 32

Erm...Keith Moon died years after Mama Cass.

Yes, I meant Later, no idea why I put earlier, 4 years later actually

Though I don’t particularly enjoy female vocals I do rate the following artists

Beth Hart
Sade
Sian Evans ( Kosheen)
Judie Tzuke
Hannah Reid ( London Grammar)
and a bit of Kate Bush

All very different in tempo and tone, unlike the microwave meals vocals we get today abusing auto-adjust ………

Another female singer from that era, who admittedly I didn't think much of - until I saw this. Incredible performance. The only singer I've ever seen match his vocals for power and energy.

Yes, Glyn, she was a fantastic blues and soul singer.

Another tragic young death.

Whenever I'd seen her before she always seemed to be doing overwrought angst-ridden dirges, but that video - which I came across completely by accident - makes me wonder why I haven't heard more of her singing like that.

Can't argue with that, you've only got look at her performances at Woodstock or Monterey

Siri - play the best ever female singer songwriter

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5oBMDcLf6WA

see also:
Eva Cassidy
Joni Mitchell
Judee Sill
Natalie Merchant

and more recently
Els Bailey
Jane Weaver
The Anchoress
Gazelle Twin

Adele is not my cup of tea, I couldn't name one song of hers' (or Taylor Swift) but its difficult to argue they aren't both good singers of the material they produce.

I may be wrong but I thought that Richard Carpenter wrote the songs and Karen was mainly an exceptional vocalist and also a drummer

Karen Carpenter had the most beautiful voice.
As someone who has a little inkling about music production I’ve often wondered how much compression or treatment her raw vocal had when being recorded, as to me it seems it didn’t need any.

‘Manufactured dirge’!

Name me one current female singer/songwriter that’s on a par.

Oh, oh, wait a minute you can’t without dredging up female artists from 20 years ago.

Welcome to the 21st century cowboy.

There are none on a par as she's the biggest artist in the world. There are some who are better in terms of what they do though.

I'd rather listen to Billie Eilish or CHVRCHES
