Let's talk about the Ipswich Town game
« on February 05, 2022, 09:27:13 pm by selby »
Tuesday Ipswich play the second of two easy games against bottom teams when they rock up in Doncaster, a team they ran riot against earlier in the season and will see the game as a given to win if they are to get into the top six playoff positions.
The front three Chaplin, Pigott, and Norwood will be licking their lips at the thought of playing against a defence that ships a lot of goals, and the defence an easy night that does not extend them before meeting stiffer opposition.
Well let's just hold it there, we have had two good wins away to top six sides, and Ipswich are no Rotherham.
We have just beaten MK Dons away a couple of games back and today have righted a wrong of near on a century and have at last beaten Sunderland in a league game, although we have not mixed very often in their company in nearly a century.
Nor have we with Ipswich although over a much shorter period, another once big club in stature who have slipped back over time and are now a regular fixture with us in division 1.
After such a great result at Sunderland, I cannot see if all are fit to play us making many if any changes to the line up, or should I say I hope not, a settled side for a number of weeks would be quite a novelty after the last twelve months.
   Would you make changes?
Can we or should it be have we a chance of making it two wins in a row?
Will Gary and Frank have a cunning plan?
Looking at the Ipswich team should we fear them?
Has todays result restored some of your faith in the team?
Are you going to the game?
Have you given up hope of survival?  I haven't by the way for the record.
Absolutely lots to discuss and mull over about this game, please have your say.

Think i'd go for a similar if not same team as played today, it's important we get some consistency now. Only changes i'd consider really would be Agard instead of Mibo from the start

Fitness, amongst our half fit recruits and returnees means there will be changes. Impossible to avoid if we want to keep them available beyond the short term.

Big test for the lads and management.  Massive confidence boost beating Sunderland and the manner in which they did so. I don’t think anyone will be getting carried away but if the team applies itself like they did against Sunderland then who knows…

I think to beat Ipswich that the formation to go for is a 4-2-3-1. Charlton beat them with a 3-1-4-2 formation. Others have matched up and come away with positive results ,either draws or wins. I just think our players did well in the Sunderland game with a four, three back there could leave us open. They don’t get beat very often obviously ,as they are having a good season .

It will again be a real battle that needs the whole squad working for each other. As with the Sunderland game, I do think we can win this one. As much as the Sunderland game took a lot out of our players I wouldn’t want to make changes, I would start with the same eleven that started that game. Obviously changes with subs might be needed earlier. The good thing is we have bits of experience to come on from the bench.

Their striker Bonne is the one to watch. Griffiths if he plays like that against Ipswich will cause them problems. Martin just needs to keep playing he is a quality player. Younger maybe nothing flash at right back but gives solidity. Jackson looks a bit of a find. Odubeko could do with a goal to get him going, he did really well for the team in the Sunderland game. One game at a time. Try to build momentum and consistency.

Reproduce the Plymouth game but iron out defensive mistakes and now we have Reo we can beat Ipswich. Problem is that we don't know if we'll get the Plymouth performance or the Rotherham performance.

I know games come thick and fast but, I'd love to see the same starting XI. The bench is looking stronger so no need to tinker as good reinforcements can come on should there be any fatigue.

According to their forum, their win on Saturday against Gillingham was the worst they've played this season and the two or three games before that were not much better.

So maybe all not well in the Ipswich camp and confidence isn't as it should be. I think we should get at them from the off and get in their faces and see if we can put them on the back foot.

Same team as Saturday. I'm sure there won't be any of those who played who don't want to start on Tuesday night.

As said on another thread, the concern is energy levels to play at the intensity that we clearly want (and need) to. But of course I see why we’d probably want to go with the same team and system. Nobody deserves to miss out after that performance.

Think they’ll all start except maybe Ro-Shaun for Knoyle (switching Ollie back) depending on his fitness as he’s been injured.

Feeling a bit more confident of us snatching something than I was a few days ago. So we’ll lose 0-5.

I think if we a serious about doing a Houdini act and escaping the drop this is just about a must win game imo.
We have to start putting back to back wins together.
If we do win and then go to Pompey on Saturday and win that one then I will seriously start to believe we can pull off an escape.

Having said that I will take 4 points from these next 2 games but would happily take 3 if we go to Lincoln and win in the following game.
We simply have to pick up a substantial no of points in this tough set of fixtures or we will leave ourselves too much to do in the run in.

It’s one game at a time though, it is pointless looking too far ahead really.
Let’s get some consistency in results.
Ipswich is a huge game, we really do need to start winning at home again.
Let’s get the fans right behind the team. Winning home games will do that.

Yes. No wins in 2 months at home since we beat Shrewsbury, although it is only 5 games but this needs to be rectified. Puts a bit less pressure on the big game at Pompey if we can manage to beat Ipswich.

Ipswich fans were well on their players backs yesterday. Hopefully more of the same Tuesday from us and the town fans.

I'd take anything from this. Just pleased with how McSheffrey got Tuesday's embarrassment out the lads' system quickly. It was good to see how well they played and how much they wanted it, particularly in that last 25 minutes or so when it was backs against the wall.

Go in nice and solid like we did against Sunderland and get what we can out of the game. Ipswich do drop points on their travels. If we can control the midfield we can win the game. I don’t look at that Ipswich midfield and see real quality. I can see us beating them but only if the team is all up for the game ,as they were against Sunderland. Stifle Bonne up front and we have a chance.
Last six away for Ipswich
Lost 0-2 Barrow FA cup
Won 4-0 Gillingham
Lost Bolton 0-2
Won Wimbledon 2-0
Lost Sheff Wednesday 0-1
We have a win lose sequence to break to beat them. They are really up and down recently.

I watched that FA Cup defeat at Barrow. Ipswich barely created a meaningful chance. They can be very brittle and short on ideas at times, especially if we set the tempo.

Ipswich are exactly the same as we are, a third division outfit, not that good a team and are still on a gradual slide.
Yes they have some history, and had a period when  they were a power in the football world with great players and had two of our greatest English managers in charge. It is history means nothing in the modern game and they are not that good, better than us possibly but in the last month we have at least closed the gap with our signings, and a win tomorrow is not an impossibility, and we need one badly.
If the players believe in themselves, have gained some confidence from the last two away games and results I see no reason why we cannot turn them over and get the win we desperately require in front of our own fans to lift the whole mood around the place.

I think the contrast of the last 2 games will be of great benefit to us. Turn up don’t play get battered and then immediately after we see what happens when we do play

My Ipswich mate reminds me their budget this year was 40 million .

That would be eye watering if true. Their last season in the Championship was 2018/19 and their wage bill was £19million. Their last filed accounts were for 2019/20 in League One and their wage bill was £12million.

I've had a cheeky fiver double on rovers to beat both Ipswich and Portsmouth, returns just shy of £160 with a well known betting company.

Am i being overly optimistic that we can beat 2 teams much higher up in the league although neither of them are in that good a form? Maybe.

Am i being naive in thinking we can string not 2 but 3 fantastic results together knowing how we usually fare after a victory this season? Probably.

Do I believe the rovers can do it and pull off what would be one of the greatest of great escapes? You better believe it baby.

I'll be there tomorrow in the south stand cheering on the lads come what may, and hopefully my drive home will not be as miserable as last tuesday.

We need to reproduce our Sunderland form between now and the end of the end of the season, We will stay up, Next 3 games are very winnable, 9 points will make a big difference to the table, especially if those teams around us lose their games.

They've won five out of their last seven league games under a new boss. What we'd do for that form...

A draw would be a good result. A win would signal that we might, just might be turning a corner.

Yes, I'll take a draw. Any and every point is valuable.

We haven't had a penalty as far as I can remember. Who's going to take it?

Well, just got to do the 10 miles to the kids school and drop her at after school club then i'm setting off for good old Donny straight after, via picking chums up in Rotherham en route so that's me done until after the game.

Hoping for a cracking game, incidents, us getting a penalty, lots of goals - mainly for us, lots of chances and 3 points.

I predict that we will 100% get a penalty tonight.

For once back to back amazing performances and i'm going for a 3-1 Rovers win. COYR!!

Simply out classed by team who were just better organised and composed . Good performance but short of the right pass in the final third .
