This will be a proud moment for many people from Doncaster.

Nice to be finally recognised as a city, it will seem surreal seeing signs saying ‘city centre’

Let's hope it really does bring the investment and attitude change we need to really move forward.  The mayor and council have ran a great campaign too.

What a day.

And a new quiz question. Which two places of the same name are Uk cities

Here’s to a great future to Doncaster City and Bangor City (County Down).

Edit: Please please don’t change the name of our football team  :scarf: :scarf:

If we were called Doncaster Town would it change? Is there any precedent for that?

Swansea I think

Absolutely, in 1969 in honour of the investiture if the Prince of Wales. It is my home town (at least it was a town when I was born there) and they are still my second team since I started following Rovers in 1962. It also affected a well known local song called ‘Swansea Town’ - the lyrics can’t really be fixed.

So that’s 3 places I have close connections to that have been promoted to cities. Not bad considering I have lived outside of the UK for 38 years

The Cricket team might have to change name though - are they still called Doncaster Town?

Doncaster Town CC play at the Town Fields. If they become Doncaster City CC I wonder if they'll play at the City Fields?

Interesting. Thanks both. The Swansea thing was before my time so didn't know about that.

Desperate Jubilee reinventing the wheel? From wiki, "Doncaster is generally identified with Cair Daun listed as one of 28 British cities in the 9th-century History of the Britons traditionally ascribed to Nennius."

Personally tho, i hate it. First for having to change, "see you you in town" etc, and second, its part of the "nouveau bland Donny culture".

Richard 1st made us a town in 1194, that'll do.

He also ceded us to Scotland at the same time

The Scottish king Edward Balliol is believed to be buried under the old post office in the City Centre

Bloody hell! I never knew that. Perhaps the city bonanza can help Donny become a pilgrimage site for the rest of the Scottish people?

As long as a certain former student of Balliol College stays well away.

Moses I wish we could change the name. There’s no chance it will happen. It was a disgrace when they added it.

Well, I'm still going to ask for a ticket to town when I catch the bus.

Still, it means we're officially a cut above the likes of Rotherham and Barnsley now.

Apparently Bentley Bulllet asked "im upstairs (who is not a football fan)"  for Doncaster to be promoted this season, because he didn't specify he fixed it so we got promoted from a Town to a City.

I mean you don't have to now say "I'm going into the city" I have family in Sheffield who refer to the city centre as town.

Someone must surely set up a Doncaster City FC in the coming years. Maybe it will be a protest club if things get messy....
