First three home matches and best starts
« on August 20, 2022, 08:08:29 pm by Dutch Uncle »
Carrying on BST's observation last week about when we last won our two opening home games I have looked over our entire Football League and Conference history - this our 96th such season. We have won our opening 3 home leagues on only 7 occasions - 6 in the League and one in the Conference. The other 6 are:

2002-03 - won opening 4 home games (Conference promotion season)
1983-84 - won our opening 3 home games on our way to promotion from tier 4 as runners up
1969-70 - won our opening 3 home games on way to mid table finish in tier 3
1965-66 - won our opening 4 home games on way to becoming champions of Division 4
1958-59 - won our opening 3 home games on way to relegation(!) from Division 3
1937-38 - won our opening 5 home games on way to runners up (and not promoted) in Division 3 North.

It doesn't happen very often (about once every 14 years) and with differing end of season results

Carrying on from last week's effort in winning our first 3 home league games, after today our first six games start of W4 D2 L0 has only been bettered or equalled on 5 occasions in the League & Conference:

1946-47: W5 D0 L1 on our way to a league record breaking season
1949-50: W4 D2 L0 on our way to winning the Division 3 North title
1953-54: W5 D1 L0 - our best ever start in Tier 2 but a poor second half of season meant mid-table
1990-91: W5 D0 L1 - won opening 5 games but ended up 11th
2002-03: W5 D1 L0 - our promotion from the Conference season

Our longest unbeaten sequence at the beginning of a season is 7 games on 4 occasions -  1949-50 (W5 D2), 1953-54 (W6 D1) and 2002-03 (W6 D1) above and 1985-86 (W3 D4 - and finished 11th)

That's put the kybosh on next weekend then

I was hoping you would put all those facts up tonight Dutch, thanks for that.
I thought after last weeks figures that it might all come tumbling down today but it didn’t.
