Free kick and a penalty
« on December 18, 2022, 12:33:58 pm by NickDRFC »
Saw this on Twitter yesterday and thought it was a good question…

You get two players (can’t be the same) from your club’s history to take:

A) a penalty
B) a 25 yard free kick at goal

Who are you picking?

Easy call for me from my 25 odd years supporting - Stock & Mulligan.

Brian Stock cool as a cucumber.

Cameron Stewart. Didn't play that much but had a good conversion rate from free kicks.

Who can forget this...

That was going to be my answer too, raven but then I re-read the question and found they couldn't be the same.

this is the best call for my lifetime watching the rovers. Dave Mulligan could take a mean free kick also.

Copps for the 25y free kick

Agree entirely with McIndoe. Did he ever miss one for us? He was immense.

Always felt confident with McIndoe but I do remember him missing more than once. Looked it up and records as follows:

Stock - Took 7, scored 7 (100%)
Sharp - Took 8, scored 7 (87.5%)
Heffernan - Took 7, scored 6 (85.7%)
McIndoe - Took 16, scored 13 (81.3%)

Stock wasn't playing at Newcastle and Heffernan didn't get off the bench that day, but Billy was on the pitch when the penalty was awarded. Annoyingly that would have put us 2-1 up with only minutes left. Obviously he missed and then Andy Carroll scored the winner in the 90th minute. Be a long time before we play them at the same level again, let alone match them from start to finish at their place.

Never seen anyone for us (and not many players for other sides) as deadly at free kicks as Glynn.

I've mentioned it before but he once hit a free kick into the wall (rare error by him). The ball hit a defender's shin. The defender was carried off.

Kevin Nolan scored the winner in that game mate.

This ain't easy. Some fabulous dead ball kickers here. My dad would have undoubtedly said Aleck and maybe Glynn if he really had to pick a second. Me? Glynn for the 25 yarder every day of the week even though Dave Mulligan was hot stuff. For the pens, I'm stuffed. Stocky or Mcindoe?? How do you choose between them two?!

Stock revealed his penalty strategy on his Copps podcast. It's actually remarkable that no opposition keepers or coaches picked up on it.

The strategy was simply changing the direction for each one: Left, Centre, Right, Left, Centre, Right (or Left, Centre, Right, Centre, Left - can't remember which way he said it was).

For the Southend playoff game, he spoke with Hayter before the game saying that if he had a penalty, it would be down the middle, following his strategy. And actually debated whether he should change it under the circumstances.

Thankfully he didn't. An unbelievably cool penalty.

Stock on pens, Glynn Snodin on free kicks. Although  based on his one season here, and performances from dead balls with his subsequent clubs, second in both categories, Neil Redfearn
