It really does. Worrying that there's no cure but hopefully the treatment can give him a long and relatively normal life whilst keeping the illness at bay.

FWIW I thought he was unfortunate to join us at a time when the club was in disarray. I really rated him and thought he could've gone on to be a very successful Football League player if circumstances were different.

Poor lad. I did like him as a player. Strange that it didn't work out for him with us - if he won the LoI three times, he was clearly at the very least Div 4 standard.

Hope he pulls through this. And yes, it does put everything else in perspective.

Sad to hear this.

I think I was told my someone at the time of his signing that Peter Wetzel couldn’t believe they’d manage to pull off this signing given the interest in him from FL clubs.

I thought on occasions he was seriously impressive but Wignall never seemed to ask him to do the same job two matches running. Wignall didn’t like him by all accounts.

A mate saw him in Ireland back at Bohemians and said he was head  and shoulders above everyone around him and couldn’t believe he was back in the LoI. From memory he ended up back over here with Coventry and Brighton.

After he left us in 2001 he went back home to Ireland for a few years but ended up signing again for Coventry City in 2007, when they were in the Championship. He then went to Brighton in League One. The lad has played at a very decent level in the English game. Just not with us!

I remember being fairly excited about the signing of Hawkins at the time. Had it on decent authority that he was, and would be, a very solid signing.

Just didn’t seem to work out for him here. Without checking the records I can’t clearly recall if he was under utilised by the Manager or just didn’t settle in properly.

Certainly went on to have a decent career though.
