Greatest classic rock act
« on April 27, 2023, 07:36:42 pm by River Don »
Aye up, not posted on here in a while.

I thought this is a question you might enjoy. I've been watching quite a bit of YouTube, particularly reaction videos...

So here is the question, is the greatest British and so possibly the world's greatest classic rock band The Beatles, The Stones... Or Queen?

Because I think it's Queen. I don't mind if you want to say it's not a British band, say Springsteen and the E Street but I don't think it is.

Just watching online, I think the reaction to Queen is consistently higher and more enthusiastic overall.

This is pre mid 80s rock, the mid 80s when I think popular music changed. so the likes of ACDC would be included.

Also I think we are far enough away in time from this era to be more objective.

There have been so many great British rock bands but I suppose the stuff performed by Queen has to be the best.
It’s a kind of magic.

And the thing about Bowie was, he was very progressive and pointing to the future.

I’ll go for Queen, but honourable mentions for Thin Lizzy and The Yardbirds

Bowie

A very good answer, that appeals to me.

Saw him twice in Donny.

Ziggy Stardust era first time . Jeans Guitar no messing. Second time Aladdin Sane , major production , several costume changes and I preferred the first one

However Queen who I stupidly saw only once were way better than Bowie imo , but I realise it fits the "one mans meat" philosophy

I saw Genesis twice , only as they were support to Lindisfarne who were great but probably don't fit into this category

I’m not a massive Queen fan but Freddie Mercury is the best group front man

That's a huge part of it. And as far as song writing goes I'd put  Queen on a par with Abba and the Bee Gees in terms of catchy music.

Screaming Lord Sutch and the Savages.

BB and Wolfie keep going on about a band called Bill Haley and the Comets. Before my time.

Queen were brilliant, but ACDC for me.

The beatles weren't my cup of tea, I found the rolling stones much more enjoyable.

Special mention to creedence clearwater revival

Saw Queen at Elland Road in 1982, Teardrop Explodes, Joan Jett & Heart were the support acts. A great day out.

It was a fantastic show, certainly one of the best I have ever seen and I am not a hugh Queen fan. Freddie was a fantastic showman & frontman, he owned the stage.

Led Zeppelin in their prime were the band I wished I had seen.

You and me both regarding Bowies 2 Top Rank gigs. I remember him saying during the 1st gig "it's just like playing in a Claab" (club in Donny speak)

This AC/DC clip hits the spot!

Have to really say they're Aussie if you're making the call. So so many great claasic Brit rock bands. Personally speaking, I'd probs settle on Zep or the Stones overall.

Who would top the bill if Cream and The Jam were playing? Asking for a Cornish friend.

My big regret was not helping myself to a Poster from the Wall on way down the Steps. People were helping themselves to them (Think they replicated Ziggy Stardust Cover) and rolling them up but I remember there were Skinheads roaming round beating up people who they thought had been to Bowie gig.

Holding a Poster gave people away and so I left them alone.

Scawsby Steve always thought of himself as a bit of a singer back in the day. In fact, some of his audience commented that he was a cross between Gordon Lightfoot and Tony Bennett. As a result, that is where he got his stage name from................. The frequent shouts of "Gordon Bennett"

Was that the original line-up that toured last year or the current line-up?
