I'm lost for words at McCann's reluctance to play him.

Maybe time to give Faulkner a chance too.

Senior isn’t that good from an attacking sense at left back is he.

Who would you have left out of the team today to play Maxwell. The only obvious one is Senior but imo Senior is the better defender.
If you play the system GM played today 4-3-1-2 there is no place for Maxwell.
If we play 3-5-2 then he can play on the left of the 5 which he has previously.

I rate Maxwell and I also rate Senior. Its the one area we are really strong in. Senior is better defensively and is a lot more physical so i have no issues with Maxwell not being selected. To play them both is putting square pegs in round holes in my opinion despite them both performing really well against Everton.

All gone quiet on Sterry hasn't it?

Would put Senior in centre.

Maxwell gives us good balance down the left when he plays and gets in some good attacking positions which put us on the front foot. Naive at times defensively but only young and progressing all the time, It could just be a coincidence but it seems to me that we don't seem to play as well when he's not in the side.

I think I’d play Maxwell more often. Maxwell can improve to do what Senior does defensively. Senior can’t improve to add what Maxwell does. Impossible.

It’s not rocket science back 4 it’s Senior - back 3 it’s Maxwell who’s much better as a wingback.

I think McCann wanted more of a physical presence in the centre half positions to deal with the 2 big lads Wrexham had upfront. Senior was moved to left back and Maxwell missed out.

That said Olowu really struggled to cope with the Palmer today.

That was my reasoning of the situation too.

I’d like Maxwell on the pitch every week. He’s  better playing further forward, so use him there. Wide left or just try him in other attacking positions.

Gareth Bale played left back for quite a while. I’m not saying Maxwell is as good as him obviously. But he’s a player I enjoy watching and we need him out there.

Maxwell wing back and Senior left centre back for me. Our best performances have come with that set up.

I’m not the manager but Maxwells name would be one of the first names on the team sheet if I was.

He’s come on leaps & bounds & I think he’ll only improve. But not sat on the bench.

I get the feeling that Olowu would have been benched if Wood was fit. To me that game needed Bobby. I really rate Olowu but he’s a bit of a liability at the moment.
Got to feel for Maxwell he’s done nothing wrong but is out of the starting 11 due to formation. Thought Senior had a terrific game yesterday btw. On the right side it was noticeable that whilst Bailey was playing there that their players never got chance to turn in but after the change it resulted in the winner

Neither Senior or Maxwell would have prevented their two goals. Midfield closing down was the problem and in most games that has been the problem doing consistently. Especially when Biggins is in the side

Some people believe what Bobby can do and he might make a difference. But we don’t know he wasn’t consistent in his play when given a chance last season but neither were other players. Will Grant give a chance is he showing more than others in training we don’t know. He is another young player to throw into the mix with all the other young players. Midfield is the problem from creating and defending they don’t do it consistently. Did one of their striker score yesterday no they were being covered both goals came from beyond the 18 yard box. Grant believes we have the midfield players although I have a a lot of faith in him I have said from the onset our midfield is not good enough consistently.

Brian Flynn used to say & he said it regarding this particular conundrum he used to like playing two fullbacks on the same side one in front of another - he said especially away from home made us defensively sounder. He said he played Husband ahead of Spurr - perhaps we could do the same having Maxwell ahead of Senior. Just a thought.

Yesterday we played 4312 which puts a lot of emphasis on the front three. Molyneux is not strong enough  or quick enough to play behind two strikers he doesn’t drive with the ball or create enough. Faal scored yes but his holding the ball is very inconsistent. Playing this system relies on the two fullbacks joining in Bailey and Senior are good defenders but do they or can they get into the attacking third enough. If not then the wide two of the central three midfield players should be driving forward and getting back to cover they are not doing that consistently. If they were and our results would show that then place for Maxwell would be there as his attacking is better than senior. We couldn’t play Senior at left centre half yesterday due to the size of their front two. Against quick smaller strikers he can as he did against Swindon

My take on this Maxwell /Senior thing is that the best way to get the best out of two good players is to..

- play Maxwell in a flat back four with Nixon, Bailey, & Anderson
- play Senior in a two next to Westbrooke as our holding midfielders.

This will allow Westbrooke to play his quarterback role with a robust tough tackling player beside him.
It'll allow Maxwell to get forward knowing that Seniors a natural fit to fill in for him when he does.

I know its not a popular on here to play a fullback in midfield but if it was good enough for Ron Saunders then it's good enough for me.

I'd then play Hurst, Moly and the new lad from Blades in a narrow three, with Ironside up front.

Sorry for coming over all SCWK but its been pissing down here and there's not been a lot to do.

Now Nixon is back in pretty sure we will have Bailey in the middle of the park. I think he’s what we’re missing

I agree that this would be a big improvement. Bailey is wasted at full back.

Agree with that but it looks to me as though Bailey's going to be playing centre half for a while.
Olowu's struggling, Wood's injured and McCann doesn't seem to rate Faulkner or Long.

We certainly have missed a player like Bailey in the middle of the park, we did lack a cutting edge with Westbrooke and Biggins in their on sat, i countered exactly one successful tackle between the two of them, we need our midfielders to work a good 15% more to get parity with most teams we have played, if they do this it takes a lot of the pressure of a suspect back four.

If this is the case then i would think for the overall balance to the side it should be Bailey back in the centre mid and Faulkner to start, we don't really have anything to loose in trying BF, but we lose to much with our lightweight midfield.

Olowu doesn’t currently offer anything more than BF. The risk is in persisting with JO

Agreed, as things stand at this time we need our centre half's to attack the ball from crosses, impose themselves on their attackers, have pace to recover a situation when the other gets caught out and command the box because the keeper wont.

Who do we have in the club at present who fits this requirement?
