I was trying to hold off while November but I gave in the other night.

We have an electric throw on the settee now, get under a blanket whilst we watch telly and the house can get pretty cool and we are still cosy.

The other night though, I realised I could see my breath! 12.5c. I  gave in and warmed it up a bit.

Mrs Mug has been away so I've easily managed to delay the inevitable.
However, she came back yesterday, so I had to bite the bullet and allow her to put it on.
I find it interesting how is it that a post menopausal woman who is permanently hot, is so desperate to have the chuffing heating on lol.
The worst thing I've ever done is have a Hive thermostat when we changed the boiler. She now has the power to turn the heating at home up before we leave the pub, as she's got the app on her phone.
The only defence I've got to prevent her going crazy with the thing is to take the batteries out of the Hive thermostat.
Not that I'd be that petty of course!!

I do recommend an electric throw by the way. Last winter I found we could comfortably use the sitting room at 16c rather than the 20c we always used to set the heating at. Sitting on warm furniture makes a big difference and it makes a big difference to the gas bill. It's not very noticeable on the electric though.

I've kept the old mechanical thermostat, it has an internal device for calibration.  Oddly, mine reads 23 degrees when it's only actually 20

Our front room is currently at 15C. I got used to it last year. I can't bear being in a room heated to 20-odd degrees these days.

We're also trying to keep the gas heating off till November. Although we did have electric heaters on for a bit at the weekend when the electric tariff went negative.

We put a dehumidifier on on the landing and get the woodburners on so the temperature gets up to 18 degrees in the hallway and rooms without burners in.

This is why I'm careful not to let the temperature go down too far. Damp becomes a problem. We've just spent a few thousand doing the roof up but more will be needed to improve the insulation generally,

They are still letting them chuck up houses that aren't well enough insulated now, and they still have gas central heating systems.

We looked at an old Victorian house but we paid for a specialist surveyor. He basically told us the property would need to be kept at 18c but also need plenty of ventilation to stop condensation. These houses are about as inefficient as you can imagine. It was however a house built when coal was plentiful and cheap.

I have to say it does a good job and certainly speeds up the drying of wet laundry, but she is in it’s thrall. She goes online and reads articles about how to use it more efficiently.
Recently there has been talk of ‘upgrading’ to a bigger unit. I’ve told her in no uncertain terms that it won’t fit in Santa’s sack.
When I bought the dehumidifier, I also bought a device that tells you the room temperature as well as the humidity level. She is obsessed with the chuffing thing. Last night she exclaimed ‘Oh no, the humidity level has gone above 70%’ and with that she shot off upstairs to switch the dehumidifier on and shut all windows, hermetically sealing us in for the night.
Current humidity = 64% so all is calm currently, but it’s like living on a knife edge!!

I bought a de humidifier last winter to help with drying clothes in the spare bedroom, miles cheaper than using the tumble dryer

The heated clothes airer from Lakeland is really good. Stops that damp smell and dries them a lot quicker.
