Black bank, ( the area )
« on October 29, 2023, 07:05:14 pm by TonySoprano »
I know the South Stand was renamed the black bank because the area (ish ) of Doncaster its in.

But I'm curious which exact area of Doncaster black bank is ? And I believe lady bank is another area ?

Also why was the area called black bank?
I can't find any info online ?

If memory serves me right, it used to be around the area where B&Q and Woodfield farm pub is.
I think it was a drain but I can only see division drain and Carr lodge drain around there now.

From memory I think ‘Lady Bank’ was nearer but people chose to ignore that as it didn’t sound ‘hard’ enough, in a pathetic, juvenile, male way. So ‘Black Bank’ was picked instead.

I could be completely wrong about that, but transpose the stadium position on the old map and check.

There’s still various drainage ditches around. I noticed the one that runs parallel to the road yesterday after the game. Plenty of time as the traffic trundled along. Maybe one of Cornelius Vermuyden’s.

I think the stadium is on Middle Bank. Black Bank was the other side of the road, opposite the outlet where the budget hotel is now.

Immediately south of Hyde Park cemetery, not sure how big the area was, my aunt lived down there opposite some allotments.

A simple convo about geography turns into an attack on men, well done  :headbang:

We're being too quick to forget our former stadium, surely it has to be the Belle End?

It's a great resource! Thanks.

I guess the next question, is what's the origin of the names , black, decoy, lady etc ?
And why bank?
Something to do with the railway ?

Bank because it is low lying land so banking was needed to raise the level above the water to allow access.

Decoy may be a reference to a duck decoy which was a structure used to catch ducks.

No idea on Black and Lady though.

This is a map from 1854 before the railways arrived showing Decoy Wood at the end of Decoy Bank.

Pissy beds refers to fields of dandelions.

Makes sense. Great explanation

Must have been an affluent area with all the banks!
