I will always smile when I think of Alfie, whatever he did on the pitch at rovers, Charlton, or anywhere else for that matter.

When my mum was chosen as a mascot for rovers on Mother’s Day she escorted Alfie out on to the pitch and treated her, in her words, as if she was his own mum. He was amazing and her favourite player from that day. Then when she was awarded one of the ‘12 gifts of Christmas’ just before she passed away, she was really poorly but Alfie presented her with all sorts of gifts and remembered her from the mascots day and spent time with her chatting about football, rovers and life in general with great empathy. She left the club shop with a smile on her face we hadn’t seen for such a long time. She died 3 months later and always talked about her “little Alfie”, thankfully before he left rovers - she’d have been devastated!

A gentleman, a good egg and filled my mums last few months with happy memories - she always smiled when she talked about him. I’ll always look out for him and cheer him on whatever he does in his career. An all round top man.
What a lovely story. There’s no doubt Alfie is looked on very fondly by pretty much every Rovers supporter. Although he was down the pecking order in a very decent side, I hope he looks back on his time at Rovers & his first chance in pro footy fondly. Great lad.

Few stats regarding Alfie.

His league goals rate is 1 goal every 206 mins, at Donny it was 1 goal every 398 mins (so nearly half as effective)

Whether Rovers were right or wrong to get rid, the improvement he has shown has been undeniable. At Cheltenham he scored 1 goal every 192 mins. Now he's moved to Charlton, he's improved massively again...a staggering 1 goal every 112 mins for the Addicks!

them stats are quite misleading tho as the majority of the time for us he played out wide whereas for Cheltenham and Charlton he played up front.

They're not misleading. They are factual.

How you interpret them is up to you...

I don’t know whether each match he played in was counted as 90 minutes or whether the figure was reduced to cover his numerous appearances as substitute. However, even so, the pressure is on a substitute forward to make his mark. Alfie, with his excessive energy and desire to make an impression, possibly made him less effective than if he has been able to spread a more measured contribution over the full match. It still adds up to the fact that we didn’t see the best of him, but his commitment was always 100%.

He’ll be happy back close to his roots - Charlton is the favourite club of people in Dartford which is where he came from I think.

There is no arguement as far as I am concerned I stand by my thoughts at the time he was with us and not jump on what he has done since he left that is all credit to him.
He was not as good a player at the time as we had in our squad in the same positions, he had a great work ethic that attracted supporters, but, he had weaknesses in his game, we had more effective strikers and wide players at the time at the level we  were playing at, and more than one manager we had used him sparingly because of that situation.
What he has done is work hard, improved, especially his first touch, and he has had a massive amount of luck getting away from here when we became the basket case we became.
Three genuine questions of those now shouting from the hill tops,
    1) If Alfie had stayed under Moore, do you think he would have developed the way he has done?
    2) Do you think Moore and subsequent managers would have given him the playing platform he has had at Cheltenham?
    3)  Would Alfie be the same player as he is now if he had stayed at Doncaster Rovers?
I am very pleased for the lad, and I admit I never for one minute thought that he would become the player he is now, I can also see why we let him go, and that is the luckiest and best thing that will ever happen to him IMHO.

I'm a massive Alfie fan, and would happily see Moore lose every game for the rest of his career, however those questions are really important Selby.

After Moore, Alfie would have been managed by Butler, Wellens, McSheffrey and Schofield, in a side in a perpetual downward spiral. I don't fancy any of them to have had a positive influence on Alfie or improved his confidence or style. Although I still wish we'd kept him so we could have found out!

Watching the game last night he was bright and hungry (as he always was with us) but his quality and confidence shone in a way we didn't get to see.

I'd love him back, I'd even take Alfie over Billy today!

When Alfie left, there were a lot of people who were sad to see him & his effort leave and wished him all the best. Judging by what people say these days you'd think there was much more regret that we were losing someone who dozens of people knew would be a bonafide League One superstar*

I feel like we could have an entire forum dedicated to Alfie May and how we should have never let him go. These topics always pop up whenever he has a good game for another team. Great player now, but didn't pull up any trees for us. Hindsight is 20/20 and all that.

It’s a great story but soon there will be more people claiming they predicted this than not haha

Possibly so but it is well documented on here who did rate him.
Thank you Hound what a kind post I'm sure BB will also appreciate this.

I know it's only against Cray Valley, but what a class goal from Alfie. His first touch was immaculate.
I thought it funny when the commentator remarked that Cheltenham fans felt robbed when Alfie was sold to Charlton for ONLY £250k … we sold to Cheltenham for £5k  :suicide:

It really is a funny one this,  not a single person disliked Alfie and everyone is delighted for him , but he wasn't right lad in right place at right time here and it's worked out perfectly for him. How many players have left and gone onto absolute obscurity that we felt could have done well, plenty but there's not many threads one them. It's not an exact science, if it was a matter of spotting quality where others don't Leicester city  winning premier wouldn't be a one off

Turnbull, there is plenty of evidence that lots of fans don't see quality, perhaps they wouldn't be the ones who can't pick out a good player.
There are some fans who sit directly behind me who constantly criticize Mo Faal and find fault with almost everything he does.

You just can't leave it alone. I just wish Marquis would pay you back the money he obviously owes you.

And he will hopefully go on to have a decent premier career . The constant need for a scapegoat I've never understood, but I'll happily admit I don't watch games  for the detail. Never really got into that side of it
