I know it's only against Cray Valley, but what a class goal from Alfie. His first touch was immaculate.

It was but the quality of the opposition had nothing to do with the quality of his touch and finish.
It wasn’t surprising to me though.

What are the odds on Alfie scoring four?

He has previous for a League 1 club against non-league in a first round replay (Chorley 2018-19)

Touches one, two and three were class. All within two strides.

The bbc summarisers are very very complimentary about Alfie’s skills and application.
Good to know that they can see what some of us Rovers fans could see as well.

Just tuned in. Who's that number 9 for Charlton?

I will hold my hands up hound and say that I got it totally wrong with Alfie.

Loved him as a person and I loved how eager he was to impress but I thought the step up in leagues was too much for him.
I guess living in the John Marquis shadow and having him gobbing off at you all the time wasn't easy for AM.
He was probably played out of position too.
I am chuffed to bits he's getting the recognition and rewards for his hard work.

I got a message from a mate telling me to tune into BBC2 to see the wonderful delights of May. I thought it was an Alan Titmouse-type gardening programme at first so I delayed switching over.

Possibly so but it is well documented on here who did rate him.

Pleased for Alfie tonight and nice to see that he is enjoying his football. He is showing now what a fine striker he is at L1 level.  At Rovers he didn’t get the service that he got at Cheltenham and that he is now getting at Charlton.

What would he have been like with service from the likes of Molyneux, Close and Westbrooke?

I wasn’t disappointed when he left Rovers, but he has shown that he has the ability to be a quality striker at this level.

Don't want to go over old ground again and again, but was just reminiscing about that Charlton play off and trying to remember if Alfie played any part.

https://www.skysports.com/football/charlton-athletic-vs-doncaster-rovers/teams/407053

If there was a pivotal moment that went against us looking back at that squad, it was a travesty we didn't achieve promotion. Had we have done, I'm sure we would have been clamouring to sign Wilks and Kane on a permanent basis but, assuming McCann would have stayed too, would Alfie been part of his plans?

Of course we will never know.

I got a message saying 'May's got a lovely pair', and I wasn't sure whether they meant James, Teresa or Brian but I felt slightly let down when i turned over.

Played any part? I'm surprised you've forgotten, Baz, that Alfie started the move that led to what should have been the winning goal. He did one of his runs that drew defenders to him, slipped the ball to Wilks, who got behind the full back and crossed for Marquis to nod in.

Which makes my point all the more relevant. That squad was blessed with players with sublime skills.

Maybe we get the chance to rectify that wrong.

I doubt he'll get a move higher up now, he's 31 next season. He's worth more to Charlton than any Championship club would now be willing to pay.

The three years in Donny gave him his initial breakthrough into the professional game . Fergie put his faith in him.

I will always smile when I think of Alfie, whatever he did on the pitch at rovers, Charlton, or anywhere else for that matter.

When my mum was chosen as a mascot for rovers on Mother’s Day she escorted Alfie out on to the pitch and treated her, in her words, as if she was his own mum. He was amazing and her favourite player from that day. Then when she was awarded one of the ‘12 gifts of Christmas’ just before she passed away, she was really poorly but Alfie presented her with all sorts of gifts and remembered her from the mascots day and spent time with her chatting about football, rovers and life in general with great empathy. She left the club shop with a smile on her face we hadn’t seen for such a long time. She died 3 months later and always talked about her “little Alfie”, thankfully before he left rovers - she’d have been devastated!

A gentleman, a good egg and filled my mums last few months with happy memories - she always smiled when she talked about him. I’ll always look out for him and cheer him on whatever he does in his career. An all round top man.

He clearly wasn’t a good manager for us but Ferguson can take credit for some of his signings. Both May and Watters were signed by Ferguson and went on to claim good fees. Problem was these were not fees to us. Whiteman we did monetise.

I agree he was given a chance by Fergie initially, but three years later he still wasn't accepted as a serious challenger for a first-team spot. In hindsight, he should have buggered off after 6/12 months.

Very harsh to say he wasn’t a good manager for us when he built a very good squad that ended up being up there in league 1. Won us promotion at the first attempt from league albeit we should’ve won the league and then got us comfortably mid table in the next season, he built the foundations for McCann.

Think May was a case of right club wrong time in terms of having Marquis above him but he will have learnt a lot from the likes of Marquis, Wilks, Copps etc. If we had that season again we could’ve possibly seen a front 2 of Marquis and May a bit more as we’ve seen McCann has improved as a manager with the different formations etc but would’ve then been hard to get Wilks and Copps in who just had to play.

It may be a superficial judgement, but if he had not had to work alongside Marquis who was always the principal striker, the game he has now would have had a chance to develop. He was in more of a supply role than a goal scoring one.

Could we have been as effective without Marquis?

You might conclude that Watters was handled similarly.
