The Alarm in the 80’s for me. Their gigs were amazing. Powerful. Raw.  Connected with their fans. Sweaty, heaving mosh pits. Loved it.

Saw them on the same tour in 2006 in nottm. Outstanding and we only went on the off chance we could pick a ticket up outside rock city. Managed to get one from a guy whose daughter's were ill. Amazing how these things go.

Kasabian in their prime were outstanding for me, amazing show.

On the total opposite, elbow.  Never seen an arena so quiet and in awe of a band.

I saw an Elbow tribute band in the Scawthorpe club a couple of years ago. They were called "Arse."

You couldn't tell them apart.

Incredible String Band, members of the band would just wander on play a tune sing a bit and wander back off stage. Goodness knows how many were actually in the band you couldn't keep track of or that just might have been me back then due to one substance or another

Plus an absolutely gorgeous 18 year old lass wrapped herself around me for the 30 minute jam of I Am the Resurrection.

Turned out they were shite after the first burst, but for a few months, they were impeccable.

It seems most of the acts I really like are better at recorded music than live performance...

The shows that actually impressed me were The Wedding Present in a small pub on the Headrow. It was as you might imagine, a local band on form. Basement Jaxx at Brixton Acadamy, they sort of put on a club night but their actual show was a spectacular, really good guest singers, the music was really tight and they had this whole Rio carnival thing with lots of feathers and exotic dancers.

And I was given a ticket to see Depeche Mode at Wembley Arena, by a mate who is a huge fan. His GF sadly was very sick on the day. That was the only time I've seen the full arena show. It was very good, it felt like everyone in their was a devoted fan. Preaching to the converted but it made for a great night.

I wouldn't know which to pick, all very different.

My mate says the best show he has ever seen was when he was dragged to see a big Robbie Williams spectacular. You never know do you.

Went to see The Fall at Camden Roundhouse. Smith just didn't seem to be into it, during the second song someone chucked a glass or a bottle or something at him. Anyway off they went. They came back after a while but it was all very disappointing.

In my experience Hip Hop rarely works live, it's a genre for DJs to play.

I saw De La Soul headline with Electronic at Heaton Park when 3 Feet High and Rising was doing so well. Bernard and Johnny Marr were pretty good but De La Soul, absolutely shocking. One of the worst I've ever seen. Love the album still though.

Donny had some good gigs in its time. Saw Radiohead play at the Dome warming up for the OK Computer Tour just before they went absolutely huge! The Leopard also good for catching a treat - The Fall, Kasabian and I even saw Snow Patrol supporting a band I liked called Magoo!

My fave gig was watching the Pixies play Castlefield Bowl in Manc - one of my fave bands as a teenager, playing on a sunny day, Where is my mind? as the sun set, with plenty of beers!

Seen lots of really good live acts (at the time) - Oasis, REM, Stone Roses, Guns n’Roses, Manic SPs, Faithless….

Seen some awful ones too - David Gray, Elbow, U2 (unpopular opinion I’d imagine - but just felt really flat and scripted at the time).

Some Ive missed out on - Queen, Pink Floyd, Big Country (with Stuart), Stones.

Haven't been to too many live performances, but I have seen two of my very favourite bands - The Eagles and Dire Straits - very very different experiences although both excellent

I saw the Eagles (I think on their Hell Freezes Over tour) in Feijenoord's de Kuip stadium - packed out, 60K there, rocking and just fabulous.

Dire Straits were interesting for an entirely different atmosphere. In 1981 they played a one off gig in Kerkrade. They had had to cancel a year earlier and the replacement event was organised with hardly any notice or publicity. The small venue was not full, only a few hundred there, and it was very intimate and great.

Don't remember much about the first gigs I went to, Japan at Sheff city hall (82) Depeche Mode, Sheff city hall, (83) probably just bounced up and down and sang for an hour, was about 15 years old.  Best were Oasis at Sheff Arena in '95 when they were raw and hungry, support act was supposed to be The Verve but they pulled out and Pulp stepped in, 2 for 1, great night.

I know what you mean. I think it was mainly due to the fact it was his first performance in England for 6 years.

I saw Dire Straits in December 85 in an arena that also doubled as the local ice rink somewhere near Chester. They came on stage nearly an hour and half late and looked totally disinterested in being there, the audience soon picked up on this and people started talking amongst themselves and not really watching the concert. The bars did a roaring trade, and to make matters worse the ice rink was covered in a coconut matting and the water was starting to seep through
