1946 to 1970
« on February 21, 2024, 10:51:48 am by selby »
What fantastic generations we had, we could fire missiles without them falling in the sea, build power stations, win world cups and test matches, have teams full of British players win the European Cup, build our own trains, had the greatest music and fashion industry's had a great air force army and navy, the NHS worked and we trained our own doctors and nurses, we went pea and potato picking on the back of a lorry after school, built our own cars and motor cycles  and look how down hill you lot have taken us ever since.
Are you proud of where you lot have taken us, because we can't believe it, especially the bit where you don't know the difference between a man and a woman, guess we will have to bring youth clubs back to teach that.

Selby do you seriously think that people in the UK had a better quality of life and outcomes in the 40s 50s and 60s compared to now?

Perhaps there’s some observational data you are privy to that everyone else isn’t?

Like pib said, who is "you lot"?

If it's Baby Boomers then I have to agree with you. Boomers have ruined what the UK could have been.

Regarding trident. I was flabbergasted that the MOD would want to make this public . Surely this is  not in the countries national
Security interest to publicise this ?

Years ago there was a programme on telly that looked into why people thought that a particular period in time was seen as a 'Golden Period' in their eyes. They interviewed a group of people across a wide variety of ages and asked them when they thought that things were 'better' in the UK and why they thought that things had got worse.

It was fascinating in that there was a pattern that virtually everyone chose the decade or period of time that they were in their 20's. Irrespective of when it was, almost all of those in the survey thought the period in which they were twenty somethings was a golden period for the country. Interestingly, people still thought this despite the huge amount of factual evidence to the contrary against it. For example, those who were in their 20's during the 1950's were presented with various facts to show that for a large proportion of the population, the 1950's was an extremely tough time. Despite this evidence, people still held onto their views. The programme concluded that it was something to do with being at an age where you're young enough to enjoy life but don't necessarily need to worry too much about the responsibilities that will come along later in life. So because things were great for an individual, they work on the assumption that this was the case for the country as a whole.

I suspect that there's some truth in this. For me, the 1980's (when I was in my 20's) was a golden period. However, my old man quite literally thought that the country completely went to pot on 1st January 1960 and thought that things would never be better than they were in the 50's!!

All this was brought about during a period/because of:
massive public debt and government borrowing (251% of GDP in 1947) - debt that was left for the grandchildren of that generation to pay-off
high taxation - top rate of income tax was 90% during the whole of this period
high immigration and a large number of migrants coming to the UK
greater trade & political integration with Europe
nationalisation of utilities & services for the benefit of the public at the expense of shareholders

all things that the OP has said they are against? Hmmmm....look at the mountain you have taken us down.
