Oh how we have gone from strength to strength since that day, building every year with barely a bump in the road. Oh…hang on…perhaps not.

I just cherry picked my way through that video and still got the goose bumps when Hayter headed in that goal.
Brilliant day.

Hayter was a great header of a ball. One of the best I've seen.

We were talking about big players who were rubbish in the air the other week! Hayter was the opposite.

Remember this one from the edge of the box? Ridiculous header.

Some header that, but the cross wasn’t half bad either

Great timing and accuracy. The only other player I can think of who rose in the air with the greatest of ease  and of similar stature was Donny's own David Speedie.

If you look at his stats he scored more with his head than his feet.

Didn't have to.  To this day I never know why Leeds didn't mark him.  It's not as if he escaped his marker, there wasn't one to begin with.  Absolutely shocking non-existent defending.  Not that I cared at the time, nor now!

Good players can find space when they need to.

DBR, perhaps you wasn't lucky or old enough to have seen the great Laurie Sheffield leaping like a salmon.  Those tree-trunk thighs of his could propel him upwards like nobody I've ever seen.

Yes, Laurie was very good, as was Big Brendan.
In more recent times, Andy Carroll didn’t lose many arial battles and not many could get up as high as Ronaldo.

It's an old forwards trick. Think they used to call it POMO in the 80's/90's (Position of maximum opportunity). Stand on the keeper to make the defenders bunch then walk casually away from the goal . Defenders are by then focussing on who's walking towards them rather than away from them.

I was too young to remember Laurie and only have very vague recollections of Alec.

Probably fair to say Brendan (who I do remember well) and Carol were expected to win their share of headers and score a higher proportion of headed goals.  I think Hayter was one who exceeded expectations in that department.

Unfortunately, it's probably a skill that's on the decline in football.
