I don't think 3 clubs reaching the play offs is an underachievement either.

Crikey. One big question where I'd be struggling to find an answer. 

Historically, how have Yorkshire Clubs faired in the Pyramid? Are the same clubs performing above or below the historical average and how do these compare nationally?

Is it bad luck? Is it a levelling up issue? Is it a lack of investment into local clubs where it's perceived as being grim up North?

I've got a headache already!

Mixed bag I would say.

Leeds, underachieved. The amount of money they’ve spent is ridiculous, I wonder if it’ll all go tits up for them again.

Sheff United - probably about what you’d expect. Difficult to stay in the premiership.

Wednesday - probably underachieved but because of a nut case owner.

Rotherham - overachieved by being in the championship, probably found their level now.

Barnsley, don’t really know enough about them.

Us - underachieved being in league 2.

It’s just ‘one of those things’, nothing to do with water, weather, wind or WhatsApp.

The only time I’m ‘interested’ in other Yorkshire clubs is when we play them.

Why would you be ‘bothered’ otherwise is beyond me.

Yes,, I don't think any of the Yorkshire Clubs are very far away from where they've been historically, so I wouldn't say they're underachieving, unless fans always believe they should be higher than where they are.

Yes, you would hope clubs occasionally overachieve to bring some excitement, joy and hope but as a football fan, part of the contract is accepting the ups and downs.

The standout was Sheff Utd for me. A truly pathetic attempt at survival. Sold some of their best players last summer and didn’t invest despite the huge windfall they were to be getting. I know they are having ownership issues but that was an absolute embarrassment of a season.

I raised it on the early thread about the play off final. I hold no love for any other club but I think it's interesting. I know not every club can be in the Prem but it's interesting that we have some big clubs with decent history and passionate fan bases. It could be written off as one of those things but I wonder if it shows how much owners money has become a force in the game and there's been a slight southern shift in terms of that power. Certainly go back 10-15 years and you'd never have been mentioning Brentford, Bournemouth, Brighton as future solid premier league clubs with Bolton and Wigan just about to go pop. Or maybe it's just a cyclical element to the game.

The only resemblance Brentford and Bournemouth have to their history, is in name alone.

What have their fans as part of their communities done? Have they swelled their attendances year on year, driving up their income and driving their team up the leagues? Or is it more of a case they've been bystanders watching their clubs be transformed into something beyond their wealth and control? I hope you can understand where I'm coming from.

The Sheff Utd owner had to pay back some huge loans after achieving promotion(s) to the Premier League, and no doubt, taking his cut for the risks he took. His objective was then to sell the club for profit having elevated their status....except nobody else seems to be seeing the same value in it.

I n the Prem just completed I make it 7 northern and 3 midland:

Liverpool
City
Utd
Newcastle
Burnley
Everton
Blades

With Wolves, Villa and Forest from t'Midlands. Luton is the town from nowhere...

Of course, next season there will only be 5 northerners in the Prem

Harrogate definitely punching above, and seem to continue to be on the up. Bradford are the perennial under-achievers with no sign of bucking that trend!

Another Yorkshire team under the radar is Middlesbrough , a team that seems to be forever in the Championship, must be hard to be a fan of a mid table team.

As an aside, a BBC weather presenter last night referred to a picture they showed as being taken at “Otley in Leeds” !! You’d think that they’d know their way around maps and understand the difference between metropolitan boroughs and actual geography.

According to Wiki Middlesbrough is an unitary authority in North Yorkshire.

Historically Middlesbrough was in North Riding of Yorkshire and Stockton-on-Tees was in County Palatine of Durham until 1974. Now are both Unitary authorities and part of Tees Valley Combined Authority along with Redcar, Hartlepool and Darlington.

I originate from Moorends and we always used to say “near Doncaster”.
