That's a pretty damning indictment on both the Tories and the program Labour are proposing.

I just hope a great many don't end up regretting what they've voted for.

Did you vote Labour in 1997?

And if so, which policies gave you a little sex tingle?

Lets just hope the Guardian don't have to run this story again in 5 years time but this time highlighting failed Labour policy.

I'd hate for us to have to endure more excrement.

But they will, the Guardian despite what people say about it are not scared to reflect reality, although if labour make the same amount of mistakes as the tories have I think it may be revolution time.

It would become an extremists paradise, all bets would be off.

I'm just hoping that its not too big a job for Starmer, the consequences of failure would be insurmountable.

By 'eck that's a hot take. I didn't vote for Blair's Labour but looking back, the first five or six years of his tenure were an absolute golden age. Britain was a shining light in the world culturally and economically. There was a buoyant job market, it was still quite achievable for first time buyers to get on the property ladder (although that heated up fairly swiftly) and whilst there were always a few knuckle-draggers who would try to stoke division on cultural lines their agenda was well off the front pages as people were generally happier and had no desire to join a culture war.

The single reason is because people want to vote the Tories out. But what they fail to realise is that by doing so they will vote in the worst government in living memory.

Starmer will have the shortest honeymoon in history.

Small but important point here tony, you cannot have memory before the fact, so therefore it is impossible to elect 'the worst government in living memory' if said government has not yet been formed or elected.

The very first time I voted, as a 22-year-old, I voted Liberal.

I was wavering between Labour and Liberal and I wrote to David Steel, then leader of the Liberal Party, asking him why I should vote for his party.
To my surprise, I received a reply, signed by him. It was a very good letter and it won my vote.

At every opportunity since then, I've voted Labour. It would take something unimaginable to change my allegiance.

When I look at the options presented by the poll in the OP, I could choose any one of about ten reasons why I've voted Labour this time. But the one I'd probably pick, given that it only allows one choice, would be to get the Tories out.

So actually I don't think the results of this poll are as worrying for Labour as they might appear. I don't necessarily see the 'winning' option as a negative comment on Labour.

I think that a lot of voters, apart from the staunchest Labour supporters, will vote for them as they can’t be any worse than the Tories have been.

Time will tell, they might not be much better (as some on here are already saying) but then again, they just might be.

We’ve endured Boris the clown and the Truss disaster.

I reckon many folks have genuine doubts personally over Starmer, again as seen on here, but out of the choices we have, he may still make a decent PM.  No one is perfect, and I don’t expect him to be.  Just better than what’s been before.

Almost everything I've read about Starmer about his previous work ethic from those he's worked for and with say that what he starts he finishes. I don't have doubts about him I have doubts about the enormity of the task left by the tories and the short attention span of some in the electorate.

I’m beginning to think that Sydney is a “bot”, programmed to respond to anything and any time someone posts anything against the Labour Party.
The content of its (his) messages are sometimes odd (fruit salad for example) and are bewildering.

in business there is a term called a disrupter

"To be a disrupter is to create a product, service, or way of doing things which displaces the existing market leaders and eventually replaces them at the helm of the sector.

People will be disappointed with what they get.

That said they're projected to get less votes than Corbyn in 2019

I’m voting for Labour because of their ruthless attitude to planning reform to build the new homes and infrastructure that are needed.

It’s productivity that is the main thing stalling the UK economy, and that isn’t down to immigration or neoliberalism in my view. I think Starmer has the right general idea on how to help with that.

This article is a good summary.

https://www.himbonomics.com/p/how-did-the-conservatives-end-up

Things will take time and I hope people are fair on him without demanding any sort of populism after 6 months.

Unlike the Lib Dems, they also seem to see nuclear as an important part of the energy mix going forward. Energy of course has been a major driver of inflation. A concern for me is the speed of which they claim a transition can be carried out in a way that will lower bills for homes and businesses while delivering a reliable power grid. We will see.

Labour are also simply more serious and are focusing on the big issues more than the Lib Dems. Whilst also being more fiscally responsible.

I think Starmer will be a pretty good PM and Labour (at the moment) are the most sensible alternative to a government that needs replacing.

I think he’ll change his mind on things like votes for 16 year olds. In the school election where my wife works it was neck and neck with Reform and Green. But I think it’s a silly idea anyway.

The Corbyn years of clownish spending pledges and insane defence attitudes has fully passed, hence why they are getting elected. I actually saw some fieldwork that suggested that if it was Corbyn v Johnson again that the Tories would win.

This should be the first government term in a long time where something batshit crazy doesn’t happen. Which will of course help.

No they aren’t radically different, but that’s not massively important to me.

The Tories need some time in opposition. The anti-immigration sentiment seems to be rising amongst the youth and in Europe. That will be the main ideological opposition in the years to come. I hope they don’t go down that road, but the force of direction tells me they will. It is also his job to steer people away from that.

No, I think we have just had the worst govt in living history for the last 14 years. Truss will go down as the worst prime minister EVER.
