Anyway back on topic I am someone who would always prefer an English manager. What's the point of a national team if you appoint foreign staff?

If we fall short with the best English manager we've got, fine.

I'd pick Howe. A bit underwhelming admittedly. But Southgate was massively underwhelming when appointed and look where that's taken us..

The FA should advertise the job here and try to recruit someone from this forum. We have lots of experts on Viking Chat.

Stick with Gareth, last 4 tournaments..A Semi, A Final, A Quarter and A Final. If that’s reason to bring someone else in, baring in mind the manager’s who have failed in the past (and yes with exceptional players) then it’s a funny old game Saint.

Well, thats that one out of the window, apparently Lee Carsley is among favourites.

Worth pointing out the Spanish manager's record before taking over their national team looks unremarkable on paper. An unremarkable couple of spells in La Liga sandwiched between long spells coaching in youth setups. He's spent a decade working his way up the international age groups in the Spain setup.

Worth remembering when the next man up for England is inevitably being slaughtered for not being "proven" enough.

Will the FA need to agree compensation with ourselves?

I reckon it'll be Carsley too given his success with the U21s.

Listen Sky sports this afternoon talking to their reporter from Newcastle I can’t see being Eddie Howe hes getting nearly twice what Gareth was getting. He signed a multi year contract last year that’s big compensation and he believes he’s happy at Newcastle

Same for the Argentina manager, a temporary soultion from the coaching staff or u21s I think, who's now won a world cup and copa America. But it won't stop our hacks and pundits from throwing their toys out if we do appoint someone who isn't a big name

Don’t know much about Carsley other than he was McShefferys mentor which I’m going to ignore!

I don’t mind if it’s not a big name and having the U21 manager stepping up did work really well with Gareth. Maybe the right thing to do is have a longer selection process and let him have a few matches.

I would like ti think we put a call in to Klopp but if he’s not interested fair enough.

Potter was great at Brighton but I saw him as a proper coach who needed time with the players, which he never got at Chelsea, not sure how that translates into the short international windows.

Potter for me, similar profile of person as Southgate but is better tactically, seems like a good fit. Wouldn't hate Carsley as that is what most successful nations do - promote successful youth coaches who know the process/people and tournament environment etc. Who'd heard of de la Fuente a month ago?

There's no chance in hell we get a Klopp, and often these big appointments of successful club managers do not work - see Capello for us and Luis Enrique for Spain.

Free Press reporting that Darren Moore has made it onto the bookies shortlist... He’d certainly have us well prepared for a pelanty shoot out.

Carsley on an interim role wouldn’t be a bad call, as he has the U21’s playing some nice football.

Kieran McKenna would be in my thoughts, Bielsa  a couple of years ago would be a good fit for our players, and another who if still up to it I would consider.

Bielsa’s style transformed Leeds into an attractive attacking force, but it raises what is the central issue surrounding Southgate’s period in charge. Will the next manager satisfy the apparent insatiable desire for a more enterprising style?

And this highlights the essential difference between league and knock-out football. In International football, losing is often more of a risk than in a 40-odd match season. And of course, especially when you get to quarter finals and beyond.

So, as an international manager, especially when you are finding your feet, is it not surprising n that you play it safe? So will critics ever recognise this?

The more I think about it the more I come around to giving him the job permanently. The similarities to the success of the Spanish coach are there for all to see.

- Successfully coached through the youth setup
-FA man
- Knows many of the players
- Attractive but effective style of football
- Done the hard yards coaching for a decade
- Bald

I wouldn't be upset with him.

I think they will go for Steve Cooper, the Leicester manager. He has managed through a lot of the younger age groups.
