Squad for Saturday
« on August 08, 2024, 08:45:06 pm by NickDRFC »
Surely we're done now with incomings*? Assuming everyone here is fit and ready, I'd go with:

TSL
Sterry Wood Olowu Maxwell
Bailey Broadbent
Molyneux Hurst Gibson
Ironside

Lawlor, McGrath, Nixon, Kelly, Sbarra, Yeboah, Sharp

This assumes McGrath covers the "home grown" quota. I'm sure the Olowu pick is controversial, especially given Anderson misses out entirely, but I feel like this could be the season that he really establishes himself and I'm always wary of the lack of pace in the Anderson/Wood pairing. I do think that Anderson will start with Wood, though. Not seen any pre-season but it feels like Broadbent has done well enough to start.

That would leave Anderson, Senior, Flint, Clifton, SSB & Westbrooke not making the squad, and Close to come back when fit. Will be some job managing the squad and morale for those that are missing out this year! And I'm probably still missing someone!

EDIT - *I guess we may still be looking to replace Miller so possibly even more decisions to make...

I agree with most of your selection however I think Anderson will start with Olowu on the bench and McGrath missing out.

Not controversial from me:

TSL

Sterry. Wood. Anderson. Maxwell

      Bailey. Broadbent

Molyneux.   Hurst.   Gibson

           Ironside

Lawlor. Olowu. Nixon. Sbarra. Yeboah. Sharp. Clifton

It’s been mentioned before that you need a homegrown player in the squad, so one of McGrath (if he qualifies), Flint or SSB would need to be on the bench.

Do we know if McGrath counts? If so, Olowu would miss out.

With Lawlor starting at Rotherham, I think he might get the nod. To be fair he did make a couple of good reaction saves. I'm no Lawlor fan but, he's just edging it for me.

It's a club developed player, which means:

‘Club Developed Player’ means a Player who has been registered with the relevant
Club for a minimum of 12 months prior to the end of his Under 19 Season (as
determined in accordance with the Youth Development Rules).

It reads like it doesn't kick in until the window has closed and talks about youth players having been sold on as being an exception, could the kids who went to man utd as an example mean it doesn't apply?

Surely this rule you talking about covers any club in our football association therefore any player who has been developed in any team in our football association covers the criteria

Therefore squad for Saturday

                    TSL

Sterry.  Anderson Wood. Maxwell

          Bailey.     Kelly

Molyneux.      Hurst.           Gibson

                 Ironside

Lawlor.    Nixon.    Olowu.  Broadbent.   Clifton or Sbarra  Yeboah.  Sharp

If Tom is fit, he is going to start with Wood. That’s pretty clear. Not had ideal pre-season though. I also don’t think the Chelsea lad is going to be here and sat on the bench.

Agree with Anderson. He looked fine at Rotherham. Olowu on the bench for the switch to a back 5. McGrath as back up.

Unless Broadbent has a knock, he's surely got to start. He's earned that right in preseason and would be a smack in the mouth if Kelly went straight in. Kelly could be saved for the final flourish in the last quarter, along with Billy, Sbarra and Yeboah.

We have not seen a squad this strong for many a year. There is talent everywhere, including on the bench.

Home grown player rule 34.9 either from our club or from a club in the football association.
Club developed player to be named after the transfer window closes34.12
So we will see how it’s sorted

It's incredible,  not sure how he's going yo keep everyone happy.
I do have a feeling one of close or westbrooke will be moved on. They are in a similar position to Miller.

There will be injuries no doubt.  The best teams use 16 players a game now.  I'm sure he's hoping he can rotate a bit and rest players at times too.  You'd want to see sharp, Ironside for example at it fully for 60 mins then the other coming on and keep that tempo up.

Our downfall in the Everton game last year was that lack of a bench, we shouldn't have that problem this year.  It's a much bigger squad game now than it ever has been with the 5 subs.

Perhaps, although he gave them both new deals just a few months back.

I wouldn’t start Lawlor, also even before Flint went on loan the homegrown player was more likely to be Straughan-Brown

I was just thinking that. Not the same and no doubt, we'll get multiple threads on the match without it. Come on Selby, do your thing.

If Lawlor starts we've brought in a massive downgrade on TLT on loan

He is still finding his feet at this level of football.
It seems we have brought in potential rather than someone who has proven himself at Football League level.
He only played 2 games for Bromley last season. That’s not much experience to call on.
I hope this proves not to be a bit of a clanger.
If he isn’t good enough for a regular starting birth then he needs to get sent back to Chelsea.
I am sure there must be a clause in the deal to allow that.
Let’s give him a chance over the first 7/8 games and then see what we all think.
The keeper is so important and can be a difference of 15/20 points over a full season. That’s massive.
We saw what TLT did in those final 18 games last season.
