Such a change
« on August 20, 2024, 09:57:31 pm by Metalmicky »
From the euphoria of the end of season and the great pre season and start, it is so very noticeable how quiet this forum goes after a poor result....

I'm guessing some have been gathered in the positive wave and are in shock, but it is nowhere near the cataclysmic demises of old........ so galvanize yourselves people we are from Doncaster and it will fluctuate .............with regularity.

Teams who win L2 have regularly lost 8 or 10 matches.

At least the forum hasn't descended into the shitfest that it regularly did after a defeat.

To be honest I regularly check on here and I just took it as there was no panic.

Yes we will lose some.

Confident in the squad

Confident in the manager

Confident in the owner/chairman

Not expecting many if any signings

Next game is best part of a week away which I'm confident we will win

Other than making small talk not really much to do is there

We lost 3 out of the first 9 of the promotion season from this league in 2016/17.

Far too early to panic.

The pleasure is to play, makes no difference what you say.

I'll add to this, 2 of those 3 were to very average to poor sides. Accrington (finished 13th) and Crewe (finished 17th). The other was to Luton (finished 4th).

Think this is just a "wait and see" period before the next match, to see if the last result was an anomaly, or if it's something worse.

Stockport also started last season with successive defeats, and their record after 5 games was W1 D1 L3.

Wrexham started with a 3-5 home defeat, and their record after 5 games was W1 D3 L1. They were also trounced 5-0 by Stockport in September.

I honestly expect us to lose games with the way Grant sets us up, remembering the last time he was here we took some decent beatings yet made the playoffs same as last season so I’m not worried about the Newport game as hopefully that was a kick up the backside and everyone has learnt from it including us as fans

Obviously no one wants us to lose a match but it is better points wise to win two and lose one rather than win one and draw two.

It is also better to lose to a side lower down a league than a side around you in the table.

These sound like worryingly bad results  :chair:

The big difference with previous seasons is that we can see the system is a great one, players make individual errors and that causes a loss, but more often than not we will win, the system will ensure that. It would take a BIG run of bad results to knock people's confidence in GM.

I guess they were. The starting XI that played us at the start of October featured only 4 of the players who started the first match of the season. Looks like they had wholesale changes in the first half dozen games.

And before folk start getting their knickers in a twist, no, I'm not suggesting wholesale changes of personnel are required.

I think it's a good point actually. We'll eventually settle on a strongest XI, and I'm sure it'll look different to the side that started the season. I doubt it'll be quite as dramatic as the Stockport example, but I can see there being a bit of chopping and changing in midfield and defence before we find the best formula, because we've got such good competition there now.

The wingers, Bailey, and Ironside/Sharp will be hard to displace I think, but you could make a case for other options being tried in pretty much all other positions. Nixon, Olowu, Fleming, Kelly, Sbarra, Close and Westbrook all yet to start in the league but are all what you'd consider potential starting players.

A question for the brains trust ........... how do we deal with teams that play with a high press. Crew did it in the play offs and and most managers will know to do it, if they can against us.

Just be good enough and confident enough to play through the press.
Maybe also go long sometimes as we did in the first league game.

We have to play quicker. We showed we could do it last season. The goals we gave away on Saturday were from people holding on to the ball for too long. More one and two touch required - these players can do it.
