Most depressing song ever
« on August 30, 2024, 05:53:52 pm by scawsby steve »
I'll go first seeing as it's my idea.

"Honey" by Bobby Goldsboro.

"Seasons in the sun" by Terry Jacks.

There's 2 stinkers to start.

I prefer his songs to those of his brother, Dai.

Is it that little jingle, the European Broadcasters Union play to announce the start of the Eurovision Song Contest?

I think it might be the theme tune of Mrs Browns Boys.

Seasons in the Sun?

You ever heard the original by Jacques Brel? Le Moribund

Or, by him, Ne Me Quitte Pas? Or Funeral Tango.

But nothing, nothing beats the Joy Division album Closer.

Taking the subject more seriously, if you really want to get the party started, it’s difficult to beat Stephen Patrick Morrissey.

"I Know It's Over"

Oh Mother, I can feel the soil falling over my head
And as I climb into an empty bed
Oh well, enough said

I know it's over – still I cling
I don't know where else I can go
Over

Oh Mother, I can feel the soil falling over my head
See, the sea wants to take me
The knife wants to slit me
Do you think you can help me?
Sad veiled bride, please be happy
Handsome groom, give her room
Loud, loutish lover, treat her kindly
Though she needs you more than she loves you

And I know it's over – still I cling
I don't know where else I can go
Over and over and over and over
Over and over
I know it's over, and it never really began
But in my heart it was so real
And you even spoke to me, and said:

"If you're so funny
Then why are you on your own tonight?
And if you're so clever
Then why are you on your own tonight?
If you're so very entertaining
Then why are you on your own tonight?
If you're so very good-looking
Why do you sleep alone tonight?
I know... 'cause tonight is just like any other night
That's why you're on your own tonight
With your triumphs and your charms
While they're in each other's arms..."

It's so easy to laugh, it's so easy to hate
It takes strength to be gentle and kind
Over, over, over, over
It's so easy to laugh, it's so easy to hate
It takes guts to be gentle and kind
Over, over
Love is natural and real
But not for you, my love
Not tonight, my love
Love is natural and real
But not for such as you and I
My love

Oh Mother, I can feel the soil falling over my head
Mother, I can feel the soil falling over my head
Mother, I can feel the soil falling over my head
Mother, I can feel the soil falling over my head
Oh Mother, I can feel the soil falling over my head
Oh Mother, I can feel the soil falling over my head
Oh Mother, I can feel the soil falling over my head
Mother, I can feel the soil falling over my head

Love will tear us apart again Joy division, one of the saddest songs ever or one of the best, I’m still not sure which.

I listened to that on repeat on my Walkman in 1986 for about 6 months.  Explains a lot.

Both.  Add Atmosphere, Heart and Soul and Atrocity Exhibition to that too.  All brilliant.

Anything by Lewis Capaldi.

One break-up song is OK, maybe even two, but change the f**king record!

Nay, Wolfie. I thought it was brilliant taking the p*ss out of one of the most overrated hits ever, performed by those 2 plonkers from "Grease".

Night Shift by Siouxsie & The Banshees.

The most unremittingly downbeat song I've ever heard. It being about the Yorkshire Ripper adds another layer on top.

Not the most depressing, but the saddest pair of songs I know are Some Riot and Friend of Ours by Elbow. First one written to a mate who was drinking himself to death, the second one a desperately sad send off to him after he'd died.

Having lost a very close friend this year, Friend of Ours cracks me up every time.

Someone mentioned the smiths earlier, can’t get more depressing than “suffer little children”..

Come to think of it, the most depressing one I can recall is “tell Laura I love her” by Ricky Vallance..

Tears in heaven.

Eric Clapton.

I'll second that. I say this as a huge Clapton fan but the song is unlistenable. Firstly because of the desperately sad backstory to it and secondly because its a proper dirge. I genuinely cannot bear to hear it and I think it's a combination of both if those things.
