So, yesterday morning I'm in Swindon, couple of hours or so to finish a job off, when the message I was hoping for came through "can you start the Chorley job tomorrow? " You bet I can.
Drive up to Blackpool, cheap digs & travel up to Fleetwood to the game, it's a no brainer, isn't it? Except it never quite is, is it? It's cold, it's pissing it down, I've only got a light jacket packed that's not waterproof, it's Fleetwood.... we never get owt there, we're struggling to get shots on target never mind goals, so are they by all accounts, it's all set up to be another forgettable one in the life of a Rovers fan.
As I'm finding layers, hats, gloves out of the van, the pub's just over the road from the digs, I bet the barmaids a flirty one, takeaways galore up & down the same street, I haven't even bought a ticket yet....
No ! Come on, Spud, it might be one of those nights !

Have to say I really enjoyed that last night. The result helped obviously but I expected going to Fleetwood to be a horrible experience all round... whilst it was weather-wise, aside from that it's a decent setup they've got there. The ground is small and a bit higgledy-piggledy but it exceeded my expectations. Good view from the away end but also close enough to the pitch to give it that magic, decent facilities, friendly staff and stewards, and I thought the pitch looked decent considering the conditions. Thankfully they were very accommodating giving us the 3 points as well which is probably the main factor.

Agree with that, pib. Staff & stewards were friendly, was even told when buying my ticket that they were letting us go between the seating & terracing as we wished, the steward I chatted to was a Huddersfield fan.

Spent the match chatting to a fellow fan who seemed to have travelled on his own, we didn't do the introductions lol, we're blokes. If you were right behind the goal, with glasses on, ey up.

Also, that was my third away this season, after Port Vale & Bradford, maybe I'm the anti-phillsky? Not that I want to push my luck too much.

As you say Spud, it is amazing how a win changes your view.

I've come away from the 'Highbury Stadium' on previous visits absolutely hating the place, with that bloody Captain Pugwash theme as an irritating ear-worm.

But now I see what a really nice place this is, with an excellent Sports Bar which puts the BVB to shame, friendly fans and stewards, a very good quality big screen and a crystal-clear tannoy system which again puts our version to shame.

Still had the Captain Pugwash theme as an ear-worm in the car on the way home, but this time found myself humming along to it!

This is what being a fan is all about..

Works both ways:  a few years back I had to take some material I had sold, from our office Lincolnshire to a company based at Prestwick airport.  A long return trip on a busy Friday on the roads, so I arranged to stay at my folks’ in Donny on the way back.  Went via Middlesbrough to take in the game.  Lost 0-4 and Rob Jones got crocked and was never the same again.

On the flip side, I had a similar trip towards Blackpool on a Tuesday.  Last minute decision to go via the KM and pick up a ticket for that nights game at Hillsborough.  That 2-0 win when we played them off the park, Billy scored against “them”, and that overhead kick.

I made a day of it arriving in Fleetwood at about 10am and setting off walking south on the coastal path. Three hours or so later arriving in Blackpool where I had fish and chips.  I had intended to go back to Fleetwood on the tram but thought sod it I'll walk back.  When I arrived back at my car it was dark and I was drenched.

I thoroughly enjoyed the game and thought that ironically we played the conditions much better than Fleetwood.  A very professional performance. Back in Donny by midnight and fast asleep as soon as my head hit the pillow. 

As you say....'those nights, days, moments'. They make it all worthwhile.
