The game and the Shoot out

Chuffed to death we won . 100 PC pleased with every single player that produced that fighting performance

One I would like to praise to the hilt is Ben Close. What cajones he must have had to dink his Penalty down rhe middle

He must have known the s*** he would get if he screwed up,  on.here and elsewhere but the keeper was in the bottom left corner and Ben's spot kick was going at 10 mph into the exact centre of the net

Well done Ben . I'll take my hat off to you sir and of course every other player as I said right at the start

That was top quality it’s true. Brave or foolish to go for it depending on how you look at it.

He’s a good player and he’s played a lot of games for us. He may play a lot more. Who knows.

The Trevor Hockey beard could be the key to his resurgence.

I'd say brave for sure.

When that bloke " invented " it  Panenka I think the Commentator said , nobody had ever seen anything like it

Now the Keeper knows it might be in the takers mind , but we'll braved Ben .

Sterrys was a crucial penalty after we'd missed

I remember a Man City player recently trying a Panenka penalty  and the keeper just stood up and plucked it out of the air.
The taker (I don’t remember who it was) got fearful stick from the fans.

The conundrum that is Ben Close.
Twice yesterday he took on the ball with fresh legs with a definite possibility of a fast counter, both times he took the easy safe footballing option of retreating back.
Then the penalty, a gentle dink, far too classy above this level, and he wanted to tell us this.
The sooner we sell him to a lovely flowing easy on the eye  footballing side in the championship the better for everyone, especially us.

He hasn’t got any pace to run beyond players and he knew that, maybe he could have played the ball in behind to someone else but didn’t want to risk giving it away.

Close’s trouble is he’s never ‘risked it’. That penetrated pass to release Sharp, Molyneau, Hurst.

If he doesn’t do that 8 out of 10 times as a focal midfielder as opposed to a defensive midfielder who gets stuck in just what exactly does he bring to ‘the party’?

Get rid.

I’m not a Close fan either but there’s not a player in the history of world football who’s tried to play a “penetrated” pass 8 times out of 10. It would be suicidal.

On the subject of penalties, the shootout at Hull once again showed that generally 25% (ish) of penalties are not scored.

Didn’t Jamie Patterson once do something similar at an away game?

I was thinking that too about Close, summed him up in that one penalty. Class, but maybe a fish out of water in L2.

Remember after the Crewe penalties I read somewhere that the first team to miss often goes on to win. Not sure if it increases the pressure when defending a lead in a shoot out (and if you're gonna miss, miss the first one) but when it was looking pretty tough after our top man on penalties missed this popped into my head and then it happened again. Interested to see the stats on that.

Molyneux said he was planning to do a Panenka himself when he saw the keeper was diving every time, but didn't dare do it after Close had.

Chuffed to death we won . 100 PC pleased with every single player that produced that fighting performance

Big up to all those who stepped up further to take the Pens. Joe unlucky , the rest superb under tremendous pressure as Hull potted again and again . Each of our players replied positively under the most extreme pressure

Not a fan of a panenka at all, if the keeper catches that then he's public enemy number 1 and would have a lynch mob after him.

Just look at john bostocks one at wembley for notts county.
What a w**ker

Agree 100% - Close was showboating having been a bit part player in what was a massive effort from the rest of his teammates - disrespectful of him in my view.

I’d put some stats relating to our recent history in this post:

Exactly, he had no right to do that.
He's hardly featured at all this season.

I think that is a bit harsh on Close. Close doing the panenka might have put more doubt in the keepers mind for the last penalty, you never know.

Close took the same dinked pen against Wigan last year in the tinpot cup, he's obviously confident with it and got an eye on the keeper making his move. Lots of the top pen takers now can watch the keepers movement and pass the ball in to the empty side of the net - Toney, Mbueno etc. Not a Close fan at all (very much the opposite) but clearly he's got that in the locker and knows what he's doing.

I thought all the pens were decent, even Ironsides ironically. Thought Teddy was diving too soon for theirs and showing them too much goal, but he made a big big save just when we needed it. Great day out, good atmosphere, and a nice positive glow around the club for a few days!

From memory, didn’t Teddy dive to his left every time bar one.
Maybe he was just working the percentages and it eventually paid off.
