Big result today
« on January 18, 2025, 05:00:40 pm by colincramb »
Really big. Our run of fixtures (dare I say it) look quite favourable over the next 6 weeks or so. We’ve got to improve the home form for certain, but that feels like a massive win today at a place we historically don’t do well at. Clean sheet as well. One very happy rover tonight

That's right, but as Hound always says, all runs come to an end.

I fancy us next week.

Far from convincing and a very gritty one, but the 3 points is definately welcome. We still have a lot of work to do, though, to get near to looking like a top 3 contender.

There were signs, at times, that we were starting to get a bit more fluid in possession, but we couldn’t sustain it. A dogged display and we ground it out but we have to start showing some form going forward.

It's the poorer teams we have struggled against at home.  Harrogate will be tonight they'll not want to leave their own half for 90 minutes.

Thought we were comfortable today and defended really well.
Don’t think many teams will take anything from there with Coleman in charge

They were absolutely awful today. Not sure I rate Coleman either. Can’t see him doing much there.

Agree with them not being up to much. Didn’t look dangerous other than from set pieces in that first 25 mins. After that we looked quite comfortable. Confidence is a big thing and I just wonder if last week against hull gave us a bit of belief again. The key (as others had said) is putting some wins together, back to back, to put pressure on the others - we need to create that fear that we won’t slip up.

Really think the next 6 weeks will define our season.

I thought we played very well. Looks like we have changed the tactics abit. Less messing around at the back and getting it forward quicker

Just back. The way we have defended from front to back as a unit in the last 2 games has been really pleasing. Still feel we are poor in possession and we aren’t getting the distances right when we press. It makes it really easy for teams to turn us. But, it’s a big result given most of the teams around us won and I feel that Gillingham will go on to take points off of teams under Coleman. We have to make it count and beat Harrogate now.

It will depend when or even If he can transform Gillingham to play how he had his teams play at  Accrington.

Confidence and belief are huge in football along with character. We hopes that win at Hull would galvanise the team which helps integrate the new lads into a positive environment.

I think giving Crew his debut was a risk but, as said earlier, he's under no illusion now what he's let himself in for plus, being away from home limits being put under the microscope of an expectant home crowd. With the result and performance, it's probably worked out perfectly.

Obviously next week becomes big in terms of showing we've come out of the bad run and we really are contenders.

There's some tricky fixtures for other clubs to navigate next week, so it makes our game one where we have to show we want it more than Harrogate. Every game from here on is a promotion knock out match.

Did people saying we defended well not see the chances early in the first half? They were unlucky not to be in front. We closed the game out in the second half pretty well but I couldn’t understand why the sat back a bit more in the second half and let us have comfortable possession in our half and wanted to play on the counter. First half the pressed much higher and got on the ball themselves.

Teams will always have chances no matter how well the opponent defends at any level. We kept a clean sheet so I would say that’s a solid days work rather than we got lucky or were poor.

We made one big mistake when from a set piece we let men get goal side and the keeper made a worldie and kept us in it.
The clean sheet is a big step forward confidence wise, and we found a way to win a tight game, like last week another step forward when it could have slapped us in the face.
We are a relatively young side, and some players are learning fast what we have to do to win games we cannot football sides off the field in, on to next week, and as others have pointed out another bogey side we will have to work hard against to get anything from, and games like last week and today will have taught our side they can win tight and ugly games as well as when we play well.

With regards to your first sentence in the above post Brian, I remember that incident well and said at the time that the player who headed the ball was in an offside position when the free kick was taken.
With VAR I’m sure that he would have been deemed to be offside.
A bit like the Walsall second goal.
I would be interested to see it again if anyone has got a clip of it.
Hard to defend against something like like if the linesman doesn’t spot it.

I thought our centre halves both did very well today. Not a classic game by any stretch, but a decent away performance. They had some territory early doors and flashed some dangerous balls across the box but other than that they did little. Good win.

That yesterday was the sort of game a spineless team would have lost against a garbage footballing side but for half hour we're in our faces.

Oluwu has now been MOM for probably the last 20 games btw. Sterry last 4 or 5 has been much better too as has Bailey IMO.
