question for dull, historical folk
« on January 30, 2025, 10:09:16 pm by Herman Hessian »
...not remotely dull, of course - but when did Rovers first wear shirts with badges on 'em ?

a quick and not very in-depth search takes me back to 1950/51 - anything earlier ????

...and I'm not counting the 1911.12 shirts with 'DRFC' written on the front  ;)

Not as legit as a photo, but Historical Kits reference a line drawing with a badge for 1948.

Clearly no badge in sight. I get a feeling, 1950 was probably the first ever outing of the coat of arms crest, Hess.

I guess you’ve probably seen it but the text from the Historical Kits page describes crests. 1948-49 season is maybe the key one of change as they swapped between hoops and white shirts and crest or no crest:

“In the 1948-49 season, the team often wore white shirts at home during the autumn while their normal hooped tops were used at other times. The new shirts had "DRFC" embroidered onto a black shield edged in red. In 1950 Rovers adopted  white shirts as their official first choice but with the lettering appearing out of a red shield edged in black. This was briefly replaced in 1952”.

Back row: left to right:Len Hainsworth (RB), Syd Bycroft (CH), ?, ?. (Lawlor perhaps one and I expect I’d remember the names)
Front row; Alf Claverley (RW) Peter Doherty (IL or IR), ?, Tommy Martin (IL or IR), Dubois* (LW). *from Northern Ireland - didn’t play all that regularly, but distinctive appearance.

As for the bottom photo, I think I saw them in 1948/9, and there are some of the later team on that photo, but I can’t remember what most of them looked like - obviously.

I missed out Ken Hardwick (GK) on the back row next to Bycroft!

I can spot BB and Wolfie in the stand.

Strange that because BB recalled the tale that he was around in 1948 and "badge-ered" the Club for that upgrade to the Shirts
