I went to this game last night quite a throw back to days gone by with the surroundings and in Alfreton's case their style of play which very much resembled John Beck's Cambridge United with long balls kicked as high as possible and a long throw expert in Adam Lund who in the first half alone hurled the ball directly into Darlington's penalty area fifteen times.
So you can imagine the ball was in the air and unplayable quite a lot of the time and with Alfreton having five or six players easily over the 6ft 4ins and the rest big lads have built a side to suit their style of play.
Will like other Darlington players found it hard to control the game to the extent they and he would have liked, but what he did on the ball was very good recirculating the ball, looking for a pass wide to open the game up, but also digging in, putting a foot in defending his back line and offering them an outlet by getting into space to receive the ball when they did have a little possession.
Impressive 19 yrs old showed what little class was on show and stood up well, in fact overcame what were bullying tactics.
Darlington went all out attack in the last quarter to try and get a equaliser and Will was sacrificed and subbed as the line up was changed no reflection on his game and received a great ovation from a small band of supporters down from Darlington which was well deserved.
The move worked and Darlington equalised in the closing minutes with a great goal from 25yards side footed in the corner out of the keepers reach, a great moment of skill and intent in an otherwise dour slog of a game.
