Let's talk about the Tranmere Rovers game
« on April 16, 2025, 04:08:01 pm by selby »
I have a good memory of a game at Tranmere when we did well after them having loads of corners in a game and us sneaking away and scoring a winner after really being under the cosh all the game. So not the worst place for us to go and who can forget  the celebrations of the Bournemouth fans there after they didn't win the league; one of my best footballing moments.
Now on to Saturday and how important the game is, it's come down to us just having to go there with whatever side we can put out because of injury and have a right go while being controlled and determined. All the traits our successful sides in the past have shown and backed up by a lack of fear, if we can harness those traits in our game we certainly have the ability to succeed.
Tranmere have had a difficult season, a change of manager but have let goals in all season and if we play on the front foot, which we have done despite only drawing our last two games against teams in good form, so not that bad a result, but viewed so because of the position we are in needing the points.
Their new manager has at least lifted them out of relegation places but far from safe home and dry so they will want  a result from the game as much as we do, and should at least open up, tactics that we seem to be far more capable of overcoming than defensive teams, their goal difference hinting they are not that tight at the back.
The bad news is they  are second in the last six league form  table second only to Port Vale with three wins two draws and one loss so it will not be easy, their last game was a 3-3 draw at Accrington when they scored two late goals pulling it back from three down and showing great fighting spirit.
Andy Crosby their manager is a local lad to us who had a good  football league career as a player after we let him go, and has had a good coaching career, so will have added reason to get one over us.
All we can do is give vocal and complete support, it is now silly season when unusual things happen, no game is predictable, who would bet against Carlisle beating Port Vale, What do you think? me I have faith in the manager and his staff to do all he can to get the best out of whoever plays, and the players need the confidence to gamble especially in front of goal IMHO, Lots to discuss lots of questions and differing opinions, please have your say.

Despite what folks are saying about our recent performances, we are difficult to beat too.  Training now should be rest and recovery, and loosen up, work on the game plan.

Not much time until Friday..

I've a personal vendetta with Andy Crosby after he shouted at me to hurry up and give him the ball at a throw in when I was a ball-boy at Belle Vue. Luckily a man on the pop side gave me a finger of his kitkat and I pushed the trauma deep inside for 34 years. So I'm doubly invested in our victory on Friday!

Always a good day out, I remember a few years back being referred to as the red and white tea-towel in the away end.

Hopefully we can get some fresh legs back in, and find a moment of quality and fortune to get us the points. I think lady luck hasn't always been on our side this season, the woodwork hits and lack of penalties is evidence enough, so I'm hoping she's signed for the last few games to get us over the line!

Now a different proposition entirely under Crosby. Since he took charge, Tranmere's run of form would place them in the auto promotion places if replicated over a season. There've been decent results against Port Vale and Grimsby and an impressive win at Bradford.

Their season has been blighted by injuries so, with players returning, they may well be a bit fresher than some of ours. Particularly as we're starting to look a bit leggy and have just had a couple of tough games.

Crosby has them playing more aggressively - in a positive sense - with an emphasis on winning personal duels. We know that some of our players just don't show up when faced with that type of opposition so it may be down to Anderson, McGrath, Bailey, Clifton(?) and Ironside to instil a bit of spine.

They've scored a few recently, the 4-0 against Chesterfield being the most eye-catching result, with goals coming from across the team. But they've also conceded. Over the past three games they've scored 9 and conceded 6.

I know there's quite a few people expecting a win, with a loss unthinkable, but I think that a draw's the most likely outcome and wouldn't be a bad result.

The win against Bradford was an impressive result but not an impressive win Big H. I live in Bradford and there are quite a few City fans go to the same gym as me. They said after the game that City not for the first time this season just didn’t turn up and the match had 0-0 written all over it until the Tranmere player conned the ref into one of the worst penalty decisions ever.

It is astonishing how some of our supporters are talking down the possibility of a Rovers promotion, it’s almost as if ……. they don’t want us to go up, just to prove their position on how poor we allegedly are and how good some of the other clubs are.
I am quite sure that fans of other clubs are doing exactly the same thing.
Doing it the Rovers way is probably the Bradford way in West Yorkshire, the Walsall way in the Midlands and the County way in Nottingham.
We are not unique.

A lot of City fans are just like us saying they never do it the easy way. I think that losing in March to Carlisle and Gillingham and only drawing at Accrington  confirms this.

Spoke with Paul, no space on the buses for anyone interested. Booked tickets and booked onto the train for this one. 1 change and a 10min walk at the other end. COYR!

We are on the train via Leeds. Dropping the ladies off in Liverpool for a bit of shopping and then onto Tranmere.
Anyone booking train tickets on Trainline check the journey from Liverpool the Wirral if it is Mersey Rail, you have to print the Mersey rail ticket off to use it (you can do this in Liverpool) . The trainline ticket QR Code doesn't work on Mersey rail.

I'm driving to the game but I'm struggling to find anywhere nearby to park.
The stadium car park is sold out and I'm not finding anything suitable on My Parking Space or any similar app.

Any ideas?

Last time I went there was ample on-street parking around Victoria Park / Albany Road /Bebington Rd area if you get there early enough and don’t mind a ten minute walk to the ground.

In the past you could park outside the ground
As away fans got there earlier plenty of space
But that was 25 years ago so not gospel?

I’m driving. I found street parking a few minutes walk away last time. I parked on Clarence Road so I’m heading there again. Hopefully they haven’t changed it to residents only. Don’t want another parking ticket after getting one on Tuesday

Try the street view on Google maps, look along the street(s) for any parking restriction signs?

Won’t guarantee being absolutely current, but might be recent enough?
