Favourite comedy skit/sketch
« on April 19, 2025, 12:37:47 pm by silent majority »
When I say favourite I don't necessarily mean funniest.

Mine is this one from Eddie Izzard, 'Death Star Canteen'

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7p5KpjR93SE

There's a short story behind this for me. I was attending a company event and we were staying in the Lego Hotel in Billund in Denmark and around the corner from my room was a giant Lego model of Darth Vader and every-time I walked past it I used to say 'do you want peas with that?' which intrigued my boss, who was a Dane. I told him about this sketch and he never forgot. He kept repeating bits from it for years to come.

Good memories!

Yep that's a great one SM, I'm not even sure why I've remembered this bit of benny hill from my youth, it's not even that funny, especially trying to explain it but ............

It was a sketch where bh was being interviewed about witches and bh said ......... 'and there was all these male witches' where the interviewer (straight man) said 'warlocks' and bh said 'no, it's true' followed by one of those sideways grins to camera.

Seeing as the Supreme Court has clarified the Equality Act, I.e there are two sexes, man and woman, adult human male, adult human female, a reminder, of how bonkers the language was being twisted.
Though many will now deny ever arguing "men can be women"

Big Train had some of the best sketches.

w**king in the Workplace was one of my favourites.

I was going to mention Big Train too. The nature doc following The Artist Formerly Known as Prince was another good one of theirs.

So many others I could mention but one that doesn't get the credit it deserves is Python's "Tungsten carbide drills" sketch.

Slade in Residence Cup a Soup sketch was very good. Vic n Bob plus friends from the Fast Show.

Harry Enfield has done many excellent ones.

For sheer ingenuity, Two Ronnie's Mastermind, answering the question before last.

Just remembered The Day Today. Alan Partridge's World Cup. Foot like a traction engine, liquid football, Shit! Did you see that?

I'm not very good at singling out a favourite.

If you like that you'd love The Burkiss Way and End Of Part One from my list. They were co-written by David Renwick too, as was Whoops! Apocalypse, Hot Metal and a couple of series of Alexei Sayle's Stuff. Renwick went on to write One Foot In The Grave and Jonathan Creek.

Interesting isn't it,  nothing recent! The arts in Britain have been killed,  there's nothing much now, look at the 1980's 1990's, even 2000's, fantastic expression of  British cultural invention. Not just in comedy but music too.
Comedy now? Some crap BBC attempts of "edginess" like Mrs Brown's Boys, good grief.
Citizen Khan? What utter stale crap.

Have I Got News For You, rehashing everything of the last 30 years that has establishment approval.

The New Puritanism of the woke has strangled creativity in comedy and music.

I think it's more, there just isn't the money in British TV these days. The comedy sketch show seems to be an endanged species. Panel shows and stand up are cheaper. Things like Taskmaster.

There haven't been many sitcoms either. Gavin & Stacey. Not my cup of tea but popular. I enjoyed Detectorists and Ghosts which are decent BBC efforts that are fairly recent. It's not extinct yet.

T'interweb causing disruption basically. Young people not watching TV is an issue.

Fletch (Ronnie Barker) in Porridge talking to Mr McKay about a boxer he knew who had too many fights, “Poor bleeder. He was nothing but a walking cabbage by his last fight”.

McKay nods sagely & says “What became of him?”.

Fletch looks over the top of his paper & answers “He joined the prison service…..he’s doing very well too”.
