It was in the 2nd game the first finished 1-1 with it being a preseason I wouldn't worry the Stamford and Peterborough sports game should work better as they are a full 90 mins standard match

Very competitive outing for the squad that. The pitch was extremely dry which really didn’t help us in both halves. A lot of misjudged bouncing balls and under hit/ misplaced passes. 2 negatives I took from that was Pearson needs to improve massively to get up to speed. For slowest defenders in our history he’s gotta be up there. His legs look absolutely shot. I still don’t think Bailey is as good in midfield either. Positives were O’ Riordan and Grehan, the latter especially looked very very good. Clifton and Broadbent looked sharp and Mols looked every bit the levels above. They took the left back off who played the 2nd game for the one who played the first.

Go along with that, the first 60 minute team didn't look as good as the 2nd side. Good workout against a decent outfit. Gibson, Maxwell, & Close also showed up well. The new lads that took the eye for me were O'Riordan, Grehan, & Hanlan.

McCann on absences:

"Jamie (Sterry) woke up with a stiff groin. It's nothing too serious but we didn't want to risk him.”

“Robbie (Gotts) has got bad blisters on every toe, the kind of which I've never seen before. We left him yesterday and tonight but he'll be fine for Saturday.”

“And as for Joe (Ironside) he's a little bit behind the group in terms of fitness levels and sharpness. He missed the whole off-season programme because he's carrying a little problem in his pubic bone area from last season which got infected. He's frustrated with it. He trained single sessions in the first week but didn't in the second. And then last week in Spain he trained all the double sessions every day so he's probably four or five session behind and we'll just get him sharper before we involve him."

I can relate to Jamie Sterry’s ‘condition’ first thing in a morning.

Particularly like GM’s comment about Middleton’s offside goal.

Sterry is stiff, Ironside got the bone, they're all very excited to play for McCann!

From ‘Forever in blue jeans’.

‘Baby tonight, baby tonight by the fire you & I. N’owt but the sound of my heartbeat & yours next to mine’

In reality.

“Are you following this film?”.

“Absholutely luv. Just resting one eye at a time. Hay fever kicking in”.

“Hay fever?! Too much bloody wine more like!”.

“Rhuubisch lovey. Henjoyin this am I”.

She’s got the remote & the film is on pause as a man exits a taxi in a dark street. I feel a ‘challenge’ coming on…..& my fears were quickly realised.

“Right then. Who is that getting out of the taxi?”

I squint & retrieve my long distance glasses which at some point have inexplicably made their way in a ‘Mission Impossible’ esq way, down my nose & unbeknownst to me then abseiled their way onto my lap (sneaky Specsaver bas****s!).

I scoop them up & place them on my nose in one sweep (cue dose renewed I felt in that one decisive manoeuvre) I look at the frozen figure on the screen….& ponder, knowing the ‘balance of power’ for control of the remote in the Usher household for at least the coming weekend rests on my answer.

I see a smallish figure (could be de Niro, might be Cruise), it’s raining heavily (could be New York could be Philadelphia). Then I remember the last thing I consciously remember.

A taxi pulling up outside a pub to collect its fare…in the rain.

‘Think man think. You can pull this one out of the bag without ever having to admit you may have drifted off for 40 winks’.

‘Small man, taxi, heavy rain, pub’.

‘That there my love, what a hactor and (burp) pardon, may I dgust had, playhing a character not he ven (burp) pardon, that heavy rain can hide’.

I pause at this point to assimilate all my facts before (with arms flourished towards the tv) I announce, ‘That of course is the one & only Mike Baldwin’.

“BED, NOW!”.

Telly goes off quickly followed by all lighting. My beloved I can hear is climbing the stairs astride what sounds not unlike a baby elephant.

‘I knew I should have gone with Pacino. Looked a good start though…..burp.’

I've always heard conflicting stories about that. Is it legal, or is it not legal, with your cousin? Google reckons it's legal in this country. You could even marry her if you wanted...

Billy Heath the manager at Alfreton has his teams playing to their strengths, are tough, big, and powerful.
As a learning curve this game is probably apart from the obvious MK Dons, and Blackpool games  the hardest of the pre season games as regards what our younger players were going to come up against.
I think it was a great first friendly game, and to get a result a good sign for the coming season.
The pitch is not the best, the ball is going to come into your area at every opportunity, and you are going to have a lot of the ball with a big barrier put up across the pitch.
Getting a result is a big plus looking forward to the coming season and young players like Flint did well although I have not seen many comments about the younger players thrust into this game.

Harry Glaves. Called in at very last minute as Kasper Williams had a minor injury.

Thought he had a good game, looked well composed for a young lad and on that performance is definitely one for Selby to keep his eye on.  ;) ;)

Alfreton had a Rory Delap esque player launching throw ins into our box from anywhere in our half. There going to be a threat with that tactic in the NLN

Absolutely, I'm sure he threw one into the six yard box from nearer the half way line than the corner flag. Big weapon for them this season.
