I think it was a tad disappointing - the east stand looked largely empty, especially the corporate middle which was odd given the boxes looked full. Still not sold on the unreserved south stand stuff. It looks 3/4 full but is sold out. It’s an odd concept

League One gates this weekend. We are second lowest, above Burton Albion. Wouldn't need that many more and we get into the realm of 9-10k and sit with the sides who have similar-ish resources to us eg Rotherham, Lincoln. Noticeable pretty much all the big sides in this division were at home which will have skewed the figures. Does show some work to do though. Clearly our gates will rocket when we play any of our many local derby games.

Cardiff - 19615
Blackpool - 10900
Bradford - 19604
Burton - 5170
Rovers - 8688
Huddersfield - 17062
Lincoln - 9054
Luton - 11735
Plymouth - 16483
Rotherham - 9883
Wigan - 9471

This is Burton’s 11th consecutive season at League One or higher. Doing a great job of punching above their weight.

Much more away support at some of those of course (eg Rotherham), but league one is a well attended division these days as some of those clubs have clearly grown (Lincoln, Luton for example).

Burton is one of the better run clubs at this level but 23/24 lost around £1.5m a year. Generally they can get close to break even though, largely as their wage bill is likely smallest at that level, around £5m.

Training at St George's park is a big benefit to them too.

To be fair, rotherham will have been boosted by a sizeable away following - I imagine port vale would have brought in the region of 2000. So in theory, their home gate was less than ours

This is all based on last season figures and from a sample of one this season, but as a vague guide our gate yesterday of 8688 if ending up as our home season average, would have had us exactly half way in League One last season for average gates over course of that season, sitting beneath Lincoln City (9004) and Bristol Rovers (7880).

That’s true. 2052 Port Vale fans there yesterday. Although looking at last season, Rotherham United average home attendance was 9360 so it’s pretty much par for them.

That’s cause for concern for them then. The average away gate last season would probably have been no more than 1000 at best. It means they are down around 1000 supporters on last season

In Rotherhams 9883 there were 2100 Port Vale fans so home support was 7783.

At Lincoln there were @ 1300 Reading fans so home support @ 7700

There were @ 600 Exeter fans in our 8688.

The numbers are very similar for the home support.

Just to remind people why I think we're always going to see empty seats in the South stand is due to three reasons.

1. Reduced capacity to allow for the flexibility and benefits of unreserved seating.
2. Season members who don't turn up on the day.
3. More condensed congregation of fans in the upper central areas where the numbers standing are likely to more than seats.

It won't be long before we lock horns again with Rotherham, so while we're on this subject, what do you think the club's approach will be?

1. Limit the number of tickets to Rotherham fans to around 2,200 as with last seasons Bradford game?
Or
2. Give them 3000 plus with a view to 'selling out' the stadium?

I thought it was interesting hearing Gavin recently when he said, they involved McCann in the discussions on limiting Bradfords numbers in order to maximise 'home advantage' in the knowledge we'd lose out on approx £40k worth of ticket sales. Of course, there was the safety angle too, reducing the risk of things kicking off (obvs a small number of Bradford fans did on the day)

This game won't be as pivotal as that one but still has potential for flash points, so what do you think the club should do? (Although I guess Rotherhams allocation may have already been decided)

Ref the Rotherham game what ever the maximum that they can give us we should cap it at that for us I do expect it to be down as it’s on tv and early kick off and some will stay away just with the fact of could be trouble
