Strathspey Thistle
« on July 30, 2025, 10:19:18 pm by Barmby Rover »
It is funny what gives you satisfaction. Two or three seasons ago I was looking at leagues and came across Strathspey Thistle. Bottom of the Highland League in Scotland, with 0 points and a goal difference of over - 100. I thought that if ever a team needed support it was this one, looked them up and joined their weekly draw (£1 a week) and kept them in mind.
Last season they won 3 matches and ended up next to bottom instead of bottom. A real improvement! The new season started last Saturday, with the second matches being played tonight and Thistle have won both their opening matches! They are currently 5th in the division and I am really pleased for them.

Hey Barmy - I have been tracking Edinburgh City for a couple of season where McIndoe is the manager.

They've had a torrid time over the last three years but last season they made the play offs.

I’m the same with Cowdenbeath.
Very sad when they were relegated and have struggled in the Lowland league since.

Stenhousmuir for me, being the only domestic Scottish game I've been to. Had a free day when I was in Edinburgh a few years back, so decided to go to a game. Picked due to the decent pub next to Larbert station, and the ground being straight down one road from there, so couldn't get lost!

Hi Tommy Toes
Thank you for the offer but I already have a Raith Rovers scarf and a mug too..... and have been lucky enough to see them play a couple of times .. once at home against Morton & also away at Hibs.

I’ve only been to one Scottish League game - Hearts versus Partick Thistle, Boxing Day 1992.

We were spending a family Christmas holiday on the north-east coast at St. Abbs.
Glynn Snodin had gone on loan to Hearts (I think from Rotherham?) whose manager was Joe Jordan.

We weren’t THAT far away from Edinburgh so I persuaded Mrs Pancho that she would enjoy a Boxing Day treat by going to the game to watch  Glynn.

I’ve been to some cold footie matches but this was on another level. It was sub-zero and we had a drink in a pub near the ground, with the windows all steamed up and loads of inebriated Hearts fans speaking a foreign language.
Outside the pub, a big strapping Scotsman was selling programmes ….. wearing a T-shirt and jeans.

We got to see Glynn play, although he didn’t know it, and the game ended 1-1.
Mrs Pancho gave up the chance of a day’s shopping in Edinburgh with the rest of the family, to tag along with me to the game.

Memories are made of this……

Dutch! I've looked out for Stranraer for more years than I can remember. It all stemmed from going there on holiday a couple of times with my Mum and Dad. You can figure out how many years ago that was then!

Interesting place Stranraer. Palm trees succesfully growing in the open air for example. A huge, huge harbour that played a big role in the war - Loch Ryan it's called. The Isle of Man visible sometimes across the water. And Dutch waving just beyond....

Palm trees here as well, in my street Bob. Hardly Mediterranean climate here either

And Bangor bay was the scene of major preparations and practice for D-Day - our pier is called The Eisenhower Pier

One of my favourite football experiences, Ross Co. vs Inverness when they were both still in the 4th tier.  Most clubs get 250-400 spectators.  This was a 4500 sell out on a Tuesday night, I think the same night England drew 0-0 in Rome to qualify for the 1998 WC.

Unbelievable atmosphere, county player Derek Adams got sent off, Inverness won 3-0, and to cap it all I had a free ticket via a work colleague.

Proper football that night.

To quote Billy Connolly it's Partick Thistle F. C., as most people think they're called Partick Thistle nil.
