He might have also scored if Ajayi had passes to him late on. I only saw it on the highlights but he looked well placed.

Absolutely, Idler. From the South Stand the option to pass to Close looked so obvious.

Close came on after 69 minutes and I cannot recall seeing him involved in the match. Did he miss his chance to make an impression or was I just not paying attention?

We didn't have a lot of the ball which doesn't bode well for a ball playing midfielder. He did make two particularly strong challenges which I clearly remember thinking , bloody hell close!

Correct - Close went full-on into a 50/50 tackle and won it.
My immediate thought was of those fans who say he never tackles ……

Ajayi looked anxious to impress and it seemed to affect his judgment. Coming on as a sub he was anxious to impress, but that desire overtook what was best for the team. Let’s hope that when the game is analysed with the players, he will learn from this kind of selfish mistake.
