I read of a 160 million investment to re open .the airport .It will re vitalise the area in a way thst has not been done since the pit closures .The knock on effects for jobs and Rovers attendance figures will be good .I wish I were younger to savour all this !

Sorry it will be the biggest waste of money,Tax payers will end up paying for it , There is not enough demand to use it and it's expensive to use

There were reasons why it closed before, these were only two.

If you don't have a 'mainline' passenger carrier based at your airport (Jet2 at LBA, Easy Jet at Liverpool) you'll struggle to survive.

Just recoup a couple of the illegal covid PPE contracts dished out by the last government and there's enough money for a few airports

Absolute nonsense, spoken by someone who doesn't actually know what happened. I can assure you that the it was not those reasons why it closed at all, my source? Me, who worked there until the day it closed and i have had to work from home ever since.

It closed because the owners Peel wanted to use the land for themselves to build warehouses on it and have it as a central hub, they had previous doing this by doing the same at Sheffield City Airport which they closed, and nearly did it with Teeside Airport aswell before the council up there fought back. They then atttempted to do the same with DSA until our council fought back but by that point they had shut it down and started removing all the internal/external fixtures and fittings.

The year it closed we got an memo basically saying they were reviewing things to see whether the airport was viable, it was always going to come back to a point which benifited them. We lost Wizz Air UK that summer due to "the airport changing the contract" as stated by Wizz, because Peel knew that having them there they couldn't claim it wasn't making any money. In fact 2022 was the busiest its ever been, we had 5 based TUI aircraft there (we normally had 4, but we took one from MAN to help). Wizz Air UK planned to have 3 based aircraft but due tp crew shortage at the time post covid they went with 2, plus weekly flights with Jordan Aviation to Islamabad. On top of that we had a decent cargo programme too.

The airlines you mentioned with the exception of Jet2 have all based out of the airport at some point but left at a summer or two because of the extornionate landing fees being charged once their initial intro price to get them in expired. I saw it throughout the whole time, from 2008-2013 it struggled for a while however since 2014 it improved year on year.

The problem was the owners of the airport purposefully making it not viable so they could use the land for their own benefit

Thank you for putting this fal amazing how some don’t see what they did and just blame the airlines. Tui have already said they will be back as soon as the airport is ready, would imagine the same for others.

The previous man in charge of the cargo side has said that if it opened back up he could have cargo flights landing within 24 to 48 hours as there is so much demand to get products in and out of the uk, he just needs the relevant airport equipment and staff and hmrc/customs for the import side of side of things

They also did it with Chatham Dockyard. no longer viable lets turn it into housing and warehouses. They then claimed to have done a survey of people in the Medway Towns( pop  about 280,000)  and the majority agreed with Peels proposals :) It turned out it was a phone survey of 100 people. How many people answered?????? your guess is as good as mine. I know I don't bother answering if the numbers unknown or withheld if they want me they can leave a message and ill get back to them

PEEL also had a separate company set up for the Car Parks, that money never went back into the Airport, they also probably spent money on renovations and adding extra Gates to contribute towards losses.

I heard they wanted the Red Sandstone for the building industry and also the Mison Grit sand.
I have had a look on tint Ernest and there are over a dozen quarries in the area, aggregates area big business
