Let's talk about the Barnsley game
« on November 02, 2025, 02:25:32 pm by selby »
An old enemy game that always attracts a crowd to watch the game with the team just down the road.
Always interesting and well competed  in the past and no doubt this game will be one of the major games of the season the other team will not want to lose and means a lot to both sets of players, management, and supporters alike.
There always seems to be at least a player who has played with both sides, this game no different with Kelly one of our players on loan just last season following a well trodden path to Oakwell of players doing well for us and being snaffled up by our neighbours.
So no love lost for 90 minutes and bragging rights to be won over the game, a subject that was part of the crack down quite a few mines and in factories just a few years ago.
At least we can go into the game with a little confidence drawing and winning our last two games, and more importantly looking like we have found what should become more or less our strongest side after a run of games when through injury and form saw us constantly changing the team, which seemed to upset our rhythm and shape.
Watching Harrogate in pre season was the reason I knew deep down we were a better side than Crewe, well Barnsley were by far the best side I saw and looked on a different planet football wise to Harrogate and totally out played them in every department, and looked particularly strong at the back, big, strong and quick, and played some good quick passing football going forward, a class above.
They can play, and we will have to be on it and play to the top of our capabilities if they turn up in the mood, closing down and being on the front foot making them work and hurry is going to be a major requirement as they have players like Kelly who run direct at defenders from midfield.
So a hard game in prospect, that we will need concentration and commitment   for the full 90 minutes, which we did v Bradford so are capable of doing again if we recover our form.
The team I will leave to Grant but am hoping we show some consistency in selection.
Lot's to talk about, we need to get something from the game, and at our best are more than capable of getting points it.
The atmosphere is always good between the supporters, and most games between us throw up quite a few talking points over the years with tackles remembered for years and wins savoured if they go the right way.
So, what do you think. please have your say, Tykes welcome as always and a game to look forward to.

They haven't won away in the league since mid August and have only kept a single clean sheet in their 6 away league games this season. Their only clean sheet (and win) away from home in the league was shitty Peterborough and even that was only 1-0. They do score a few away from home though and have put two past both Bradford and Wycombe in their last away games. Not especially strong and do concede, but our issue at home is inability to take advantage of pressure so up against a side that can score away from home, we look a bit exposed.

We will have to be careful of Keillor Dunne has  scored 6 goals at 176mpg. We have Bailey who has scored 5 and Billy 3  in the league.
Grant needs to be consistent with his team selection. Maybe Sterry if ready and Gibson for Middleton.

Let's hope there's at least 9000 home fans in for this one. They've sold there 3000, although they're usually quite a quiet bunch compared to most sold out away ends.

Not going to take place. 7500, possibly 8000 at a push

Far too long since we've locked horns in the league with our 6 fingered cousins from up the road.

Really looking forward to this with both teams seeking to reignite the season after good starts.

I fancy an entertaining 3-2 win for us with Billy, Mols and Olasanya getting the goals.

I wouldn't bet against Bails getting another winner, Olusanya will do though!

I hope that Sterry is back for this game, our form has certainly dipped since his absence.

Don’t think he’s fit.

Very few are free transfers now. There is nearly always a signing on fee to both agent and player, hence the Olowu FREE TRANSFER.
Those two will have pocketed all or a large chunk of the fee offered to us in January, and everybody apart from the Rovers were happy.
So in Kelley's case it could well have revolved around numbers, and our value did not match Barnsley's who have fed off good players we have had in the past by improving on our valuation.  I have no idea if that was the case but could well have been and not for the first time we were outbid by his agent networking.

Not great, but at least I feel better now that I know the facts …….

He’s got potential, but he wasn’t that consistent for us and it was always hard to know what to do with him I thought.

He was certainly better than Crew this season but not Crew last season.

Interesting interview with Grant yesterday and how he sees Crew's development. Not expecting much from him until after the international break, then expects him to really kick on. Hope he's right.

I have been informed by a tame Dingle that they have one or two out with injury and there is some sickness in the camp, getting excuses in early or truly worried about the state of the team? your choice!

This is a big opportunity for us to get our attacking play flowing and get three points on the board. They are exactly the kind of open, attacking team we tend to do better against.

Mate of mine is a York fan and says he couldn’t believe how easy Barnsley were to carve open. And that’s a team two divisions below!

This is a must win game because four of our next five league fixtures are against teams in the current top 6. Three of those games versus the top 6 are away from home too.

There is 3 points between position 9 and position 20 in the league. Majority of teams have played 14 games. Barnsley who are on the same as us 18 have only played 12. Therefore we need  to get 3 points to keep us away from dropping further down the league, plus our goal difference is poor.
So in front of a big crowd we must endeavour to win

Josh Stones the young central attacker at York would walk into our team.

Much to the York supporters wonderment, and says a lot about our central forwards apart from Billy because he would certainly better them and was better at 17 yrs old than them, and the reason York shelled out a tidy bit on a player we could have had for nothing but travel money from Bradford four years ago, when he was in the Guisley youth cup team.

Wonder if we can get Copps a late registration, always seemed to make it happen against these!
