It’s been good everywhere else just the forward line really. We can match most teams in this division everywhere else imo.

A good Jan and we can have an exciting finish to the season. Why we’ve ended up with the forwards we have is another matter

Edit: should say our loans other than CO’R are pretty poor

What would an exciting finish to the season be? Based on current form, we'll enter January in the relegation zone.

Some of the recruitment has been poor, not all of it. Middleton and Grehan are decent. Gotts needs to stay fit, but he is quality.

The strikers though are dreadful.

It’s noticeable that Grant never addresses the striker problem and their lack of contribution. McCann is right to speak of the over all teams performance and individual performances that stand out , but his selections have been effected by injuries in other positions, yet the forwards including Billy have mostly been injury free so far , yet our top scorer is Bailey. Olusanya , Hanlan have been almost passengers in a side that desperately needs an out and out goal scorer to build on what the rest of the team are currently contributing too . McCann has to start addressing this lack of goals needed and why they are failing . His after match interviews are so sterile and stage managed so much , that he doesn’t even get asked any probing questions or volunteer any disappointment as to the team’s inability to see out matches from winning positions..

He’s not going to hang players out to dry every week is he. Just no real upside for a manager doing that.

That’s true , that there isn’t much to be-gained in lambasting your own team , but as he isn’t even given the chance to side step direct questions as to Why Hanlan our No 9 is nearly always absent from the stating 11 or if he has issues ie an ongoing injury effecting his fitness  generally , it beginning  to looking like McCann is only prepared to speak about certain topics and will not be grilled on the teams near fall of the cliff results in the league and how this is been addressed. IMO McCann is stuck in a groove  unable  to shake off the poor upfront lack of goals  or change his style of play and could even be  that he’s has ran his race here altogether!!

Seadwards:

A good Jan and we can have an exciting finish to the season. Why we’ve ended up with the forwards we have is another matter

I’m afraid the damage was done in the summer. We’ve had numerous discussions on here about January and most seem to January is not the best time to get the right players. However, going on our summer recruitment of strikers, I don’t see how it can be much worse!

We are now looking like a L2 side playing in the wrong division. Enjoyable game today up until the final third (again). We are becoming predictable.

GM dropped a big one today, when he could and should have changed Sharp and Gibson, at 1-1, just for fresh legs, if nothing else (Billy looked like he was running in quicksand at times). Gibson after he missed his big chance, when it rolled past the far post, was never in the game after that.

The other thing that’s bothering me is we don’t seem to have any sort of plan B. Other than Grant panicking and going 3 at the back, but it seems like a hit and hope kind of option and risks us losing further goals against.

If Olusanya was picked out by Lee Glover and his recruitment team, then its time he was replaced before January.
If the squad isn't improved with real lg1 quality then we're going to be in trouble in the 2nd half of the season.
Time to cut loose a lot of deadwood too and make some room in the budget for quality additions.

In the summer I'd be looking at two new full backs as well because Sterry and Maxwell cant complete a full month without injury.
Grant has made a lot of noise about Championship football,  he raised expectations with his statements so he's got to start delivering and build s side capable of competing for the next level.
He's got to stop being so loyal too, its not just about improving on the pitch, he needs to improve the coaching and recruitment side of things.
He did it with the physio department and Dave Rennie has probably been his best signing yet.

To be fair to McCann, the players he is most obviously loyal towards are our highest performers - Bailey, Molyneux, Gibson and Clifton he starts whenever he can.

We massively overperformed in the first ten games or so. This is a tough league with big budgets. We need to think about hunkering down to establish ourselves this season and avoid relegation battle, not about being in the Championship next season. We all want that but we are a relative minnow in this league.

In regards to the striker problem, as a club we put everything in one basket and failed to get him, Olusanya was a panic signing. I fully expect a new striker in January and a central midfielder. We do appear to do the same every season under McCann but 2 play-offs lost on penalties and a title we really can’t be over critical.

Another central midfielder?

Close
Westbrooke
Broadbent
Sbarra
Clifton
Gotts
Crew
Bailey

Now they might be underperforming, out on loan or out of favour, but central midfield isn't the priority with limited resources, unless we move on some of these.

Crew,Westbrooke Sbarra & Close can all go for me in Jan. Crew back to Leeds, Westbrooke stay at Scunny & Close back to Eastliegh or wherever & try & find a loan for Sbarra. I would also send Ajayi back to Spurs, Olysanya back to the US & get Hanlan out on loan to get games into him. This would leave us with a lot of scope for Jan & I would hope that we are already a long way towards getting replacements for them.

I agree with all these except Close. If Broadbent or bails gets injured we would have a real problem.

Hopefully that would be covered by a quality loan signing. I just think he has been given enough chances to prove himself but just hasn't taken them.
