I think I remember listening to one of Peter Crouch’s podcasts during lockdown and he said something about scoring a hat trick on the same day as getting married to Abbie Clancy? Of course, the banter after that was fairly basic but hilarious. Not sure if this is what you’re referring to but it was a good story anyway!

Thats a shame, it was a funny story! He also repeated his famous story about being asked in an interview, “What would you be today if you weren’t a footballer?”, and he replied, “Single”.

No idea what the real answer is though, but probably not as entertaining?!  :P

Time for a big clue.

He was was working as a bricklayer and playing football for A NON LEAGUE TEAM when his uncle wrote to ....... on his behalf to secure a trial.

Earlier he had a previous trial with Arsenal , but said that he tore the papers up because he was happy playing for THIS NON LEAGUE TEAM   and working on building sites, and didn't fancy the travel

Jamie Vardey?
  I'll pretend i didn't see that guess

BIG big clue I have left the year in

He was signed in February 1964 by ZZZZZ as a junior and made his debut as a 17-year-old in the League Cup, scoring both goals in a 2–0 win against ......... The buzz surrounding the tall, skilful teenager's goalscoring for the club's reserves – 30 goals in 20 games going into that month – was already immense, and he soon became a regular first-teamer.

yes well done .

his wikipedia page is well worth a read

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Osgood

"Osgood had a previous trial with Arsenal, but said that he tore the papers up because he was happy playing for Windsor and working on building sites, and didn't fancy the travel"

This thread was inspired by me recalling the day I met a blond haired (easily recognisable) relatively unknown 20 year old Leeds United reserve on some London Station who had travelled down with the Leeds Squad to Sutton for an FA Cup match. Revie played a full strength team and won 6-0. I made him smile when I said "Leeds and Wales" as I got his autograph .

That year Chelsea went on to play Leeds in the Final & replay  and I wondered what happened to Osgood.

That "final" was referred as  "The most brutal game" in English football history due to the high number of fouls.

as Idler will know.

Funnily enough I watched a YouTube video of the highlights (?) recently. You certainly wouldn’t have finished the first half these days with tackles like that. It would have been 5 a side.
No rolling about with fake injuries either.
