Lets Talk About the AFC Wimbledon game
« on January 13, 2026, 11:04:31 pm by selby »
After a rousing come back against Southampton and a win in the Fleetwood game when we started with what was basically at the moment is our second string we can at least go into this game and carry a little confidence forward into it.
With new players coming in and especially Adelukan and Clark looking a step up and all of them immediately showing something we could be at a place when we can look forward to better times.
Wimbledon will not be easy, a team that always seem to carry a bit of luck against us, always try to spoil and bully us and generally have done.
In both the last two games in the cups we have at least gone through the transition from back to front quicker and looked more dangerous because of it, Whether that is because cup games are generally more open remains to be seen, and in Wimbledon a real test, but we are a different looking side when we do so.
Have any of the starting line up tonight put themselves forward for a start I will leave to Grant and others, but personally I would go Pearson and Bailey in central defence.
Wimbledon are in a bit of a revival after a dip in form and went through their cup tie when dumping West Ham the last u21s side out of the EFL Cup so should be congratulated for that at least.
This and the next couple of league fixtures are the most important of this season, get some points and we have a chance of stopping up, lose and the season will be a big ask to get out of trouble.
So what do you think? what would be your team? can we get a much needed win? are you going? do  you like me see the game as one of the most important of the season, one that can give us a pointer of our future?
Lot's to discuss, lots to mull over, please have your say.

They have won 1 game in their last 11 league games and haven't won at home in the league since 27 September. This is a side on a current run of bad league form and very bad home league form.

That said, our record in London against all clubs is absolutely horrific. Getting anything in the capital is always a huge struggle so let's hope we can turn this around on Saturday as we are playing a side in poor form.

We should have beat them at home and absolutely gifted the win to them after being ahead and in complete control. We absolutely have to win this one. No alternative.

We need to start from the first minute with confidence without being gun ho. Bailey might have to play in defence. Will Grant change the formation to make us more solid and a better chance in midfield. We could play three at the back, box midfield two picking the ball from defence, two in attacking third linking up with centre forward and wing backs, two attacking wing backs and a centre forward.

McCann hasn’t had a great record against Johnnie Jackson’s AFC Wimbledon since he came back to the club -  W1 D1 L3

My only concern with playing Bailey at CB for this game would be if they play Bugiel, as he is a brute.

No if's or but's.  We badly need to win this one.
We are 6 points from safety. If we lose and results go against us then we could be 9 points by the end of the day.
Though there is plenty of games left, that is difficult gap to close, especially when you are in the form we are in

Ref on Saturday is the guy who sent off Gibson at Colchester for moving the free kick foam. Great stuff.

With Robinson, Adelakun and Okoronkwo to add to the mix, there are enough extras, along with a much stronger attitude  to win this one. I am looking forward to following this match, something I have not done for a while.

All three of those to come in for me. 4-1-4-1 formation: Clark // Nixon / Bailey / Pearson / Senior // Robinson // Moly / Gotts / Clifton / Haks // Francis

Always interesting games tactically against Wimbledon and we always fall into he same trap.

They are a team that are allergic to possession and dont think about engaging until you are well into their half. They want you to play into their low block and they filter you in to low value shooting positions. Any sign of an overload, or giving up space and it ends with a foul. They want to get the ball forward quickly, create 1v1/2v2 situations on the counter and exploit space left by teams over committing.

We so often struggle against these types of teams, Wimbledon, Harrogate, Bromley, the list goes on. Hopefully we find a way to approach this one differently from a tactical perspective. Theyve won 1 in 11 I believe, they are a dreadful side likely to spiral towards the bottom four. very winnable game if we get things right.

This is spot on. We need the holding midfielders and defenders to hold their position and not be tempted to push forwards. Use Adalekun and Molyneux to get in behind them and utilise the through ball. I can see them getting one sent off for DOGSO before we eventually win 2-0.

Without going all Liam Rosenior, I'd get the fullbacks (or one of) inverting and blocking the counter centrally when we attack. That frees up Bailey to make his runs into the box without exposing ourselves.

I see us going there and winning. Ideal for Adelakun and Sharp with regained confidence from scoring in the last game.

Dear me.
It's  probably not the language Grant would use but  it's  my attitude now, on leaving Donny I'd  be telling players we need to come back with a 0-3 victory.
We're  at the stage where hard luck stories need to be over.
Large win over league opponents now needed. Go and do it.

I’m driving down tomorrow although it’s a pain to get to. I usually park at Stanmore. Is there any advantage to going to cockfosters? Is the parking better?

I get why you are saying we need to come back with a 0-3 victory (because we are away obviously).
But in all my years playing football, when someone was asked how they got on, I have never heard anyone actually say we won 0-3.

I agree, you would say we won 3-0 away or at the name of whatever team you played.

Bloody he'll, pedants corner,  sorry for my mangling of language.
Anyway I listened to Grant's rematch interview and he said we need a win. Good to hear.
We are now at the must win stage.

2 up  font with Billy and Okoronkwo finishing off the feed from Adelakun and Mols? It would be good.

I must admit it feels like there is more pressure on us to do well today and at least don't lose, and it is a bit of a make or break moment in the season.

I think the Plymouth game sowed some seeds of doubt in the squad.

However, we have ‘fresh blood’ in the side now & they’ve had a full weeks training together so hopefully we can use that ‘pressure’ to our advantage & start our run of winning games today.

NO just start an unbeaten run  - let it happen in it's own time -  we are not in Lazarus mode - you have all seen it before
 bring Sharp on late on
half the division can be relegated
