Let's talk about the Leyton Orient game
« on January 25, 2026, 10:33:02 am by selby »
On Tuesday night an unusual ,KO time of 8 pm for TV sees us entertain Richie Wellens Leyton Orient who will be hell bent on Blunting us once again, probably the best manager we were never allowed to have and build a side.
If his team is built like himself it will be a highly skilled combative side that does not like to lose.
We in the mean time might or might not have a new much needed central defender hopefully who can tackle and has  pace, and is first and foremost a proper defender.
Yesterday we saw the best and and worst of us in one game, and learnt once again that we are one of the best sides at actually throwing what looks like certain victory away and how shallow our confidence in our own ability is in this group of players. and sad to say the fact that some of them are not up to the standard required to be consistent at League 1 level.
The only positive is that we did get a point out of the game as if we had actually lost it could have been a real downer much worse than it was.
The good news is that The Orient team and fans must be feeling much the same having lost their game to a last few minutes penalty and after Richie was booked earlier in the game when they were refused a penalty when the Bolton keeper seemed to give a stone waller away, leaving Richie perplexed to say it mildly.
As for the game the Orient went man for man in this game with a high press and looked dangerous going forward at pace, something we are not generally that great at counter acting in defence, and the memories of them going straight down the middle in our earlier game and wrecking our defenders comes back to mind, and has been copied by our opponents quite a few times in the intervening games because of our lack of pace in that area.
On a brighter note we have picked up four points in the last two games and a win in this game would give us some confidence we could turn a corner and see better things ahead.
What do you think? is one central defender incoming  enough?
Would you look inwards at the problem with one coming in? are you happier we now look to be making more chances up front? to me Gotts has been the main man lately, do you agree?
Not a lot of time between the games, can we lift ourselves after shooting ourselves in the foot yesterday or will the result hang over us? Where do you see our problems? is it individuals not being good enough? or our set up?
Lots to talk about and mull over, please have your say

They are a terrible side away from home. No side has lost more games away in League One or conceded more goals. They are on a four match losing run away from home in the league. Coming north on a cold and wet Tuesday evening cannot be their ideal scenario.

But….Wellens….

I think the Orient away game was the most pathetic performance this season. They obliterated us and made O’Riordan look like a clown. Orient were devastating that afternoon.

Win this and it would be 7 from 9 or 8 from 12 if you want to include the Bolton game, think we all would've taken that after the Stockport game.

Could do with a draw in the Rotherham vs Northampton game.

at least they got in front   talk about deja vu

twice this season they should have sacked their manager but didn't - they got some very good loans last season - this season apart from the Southampton ringer (15 goals ) their loanees have been poor   and they have some horrific results

This match is much much harder than Saturday.

If we fail to win this one, that'll be 2 wins in 20 games. Just think about that, it's almost half a season.

GM is lucky. A sequence like that wouldn't be tolerated at any other club.

Boy do we owe Richie a good beating, and I reckon Rovers are capable of doing it, the second half farce will be stinging still and they will be making sure lightning doesn't strike twice, but I hope we do, 2-0!

I believe Connolly is still injured for Orient, he's an unbelievable player at this level. El Mizouni out as well who is another very good player.

One thing is for sure Gotts must start, he’s been excellent last few games, and had he played like this in other games, no one would have been questioning his recruitment.
I would leave Gibson and Hanson out of the squad, we have others who offer more than these two.

My change to the starting eleven on Saturday would be Pearson for McGrath because I think he is the better defender.

I felt sick when Wigan’s third goal went in and I was very deflated after the game.

But I’ve pulled round now and I’m glad this game has come around quickly. I’m ready to go again and I hope the players are too!

Looking at the positives from Saturday, that first hour was possibly our best performance of the season so far, so let’s pick that up again and get the win this time.

Why do we owe Richie a good beating?

Maybe due to this stat...

Leyton Orient’s Richie Wellens has never lost to Doncaster as a Football League manager, winning two and drawing three of five meetings.

About time that run came to an end.

Saturday brought to a juddering halt the Wigan Athletic record of 7 straight league wins against Rovers, dating back to 2017.

I think its almost a guarenteed both teams to score bet as neither can defend, so 0-0 its going to be!!

Just listened to his pre match presser, they are down to bare bones and some a still touch and go for tonight, talked how we he wants us to do well just not against him. Also stated that the last time when we were in league one and he was manager the budget wasn't very good, but is pleased to see that some money has been put into the club.

I don't care who plays, or what formation Grant choses, or how many yellows or fouls we get against us ...  JUST WIN!

Never had a good memory, BR but I am now at that time of life where I can remember things from 60+ years ago clear as day but need constant reminders for just about anything that happens these days.  That's my life now, it may be yours someday.

It is nice to hear Richie still feels good about Rovers, he was a cracking player and got shafted here as a manager, it wasn't his fault he got screwed over.

I agree. After that game i had Orient down as certain promotion challenges. Perhaps in hindsight we made them look better than they are.

Strange feeling for me where I'm not looking forward to going at all.
Can't think of owt worse than being freezing in a half empty stadium watching bottom end lg1 football.

We must be mad to keep doing this to ourselves.
