Squad retain list
« on February 01, 2026, 07:06:12 pm by Nudga »
I know its early but we've all seen enough so far so thought I'd open this up for discussion.

Who would you keep and let go?

Retain

Jacob Bryant
Jake Oram

Sterry
McGrath
Senior
Grehan
Williams
Faulkner
Flint

Bailey
Robinson
Gotts
Molyneux
Adelakun

Release
TLT (not worth the risk offering anything)
Clarke (not seen enough yet)
James Maxwell ( I'm undecided with this fella)

Matty Pearson
Neill Byrne (not seen enough)
Tom Nixon

George Broadbent
Harry Clifton
Glenn Middleton
Ben Close
Jordan Gibson

Billy Sharp
Francis Okoronkwo
Brandon Hanlan

Joe Sbarra
Kyle Hurst
Zain Westbrooke

When you break it down like this its clear that this squad is bloated with lg2 players.

You can add Bailey McCann and Lincoln Pawlak to the list of players for next season.
Did'nt George Broadbent sign a new deal at the start of the season to take him to Summer 2027?
Agree with most of your release list, although I hink Pearson, Hanlon and Middleton are on 2 year deals, so in theory will be here next season.
I'd be happy if Zander Clark became our permanent keeper, and like Tom Nixon and Harry Clifton. We know Jordan Gibson is a very good player, when he wants to be, but we need to see more from him in these last 18 league games or I feel Grant will let him go. Frankie Okoronkwo has looked good in the 4 games he's started in, and was a big miss yesterday. I would'nt be disappointed if he was here next season.

With regards to the release list, I would advocate keeping Nixon and Clifton for sure and probably Broadbent as well.
Otherwise I broadly agree with you.

No way would I let Tom Nixon go. He's a good young full back.

The above list (post #4) is the full list. Got it from transfermarkt website. Unless I have missed any others out on loan.

Surely Clifton has earnt a new deal regardless of league. He’s been good and in my opinion still a great back up if we stay up and sign better players for the starting 11.

Clifton and Senior from that list for me. I’d let the rest go.

Clifton has a contract until this summer plus an option of a further 12 months. His deal isn’t necessarily up this summer.

Might depend what league we're in for a few. You're right though there's too many L2 players in our squad.

L1 quality players off the top of my head:

Sterry
Maxwell (when he's on form)
Bailey
Mols
Haks
Gotts
Gibson (doesn't show it enough though)

End of list. Too early to say on Frankie, Clark etc

I’m not too bothered about discussing the loanees as all of ours are signed with a view to another club signing them on a permanent deal.

We could well be in L2 so I’ll put names in bold anyone who I would keep in L2 but not L1.

GK:
Jacob Bryant (loan)
Jake Oram (loan)

Right Back:
Jamie Sterry

Left Back:
Jack Senior
Bayley McCann (loan)

Centre Back:
Jay McGrath
Sean Grehan
Kasper Williams (loan)

CM/DM/CAM:
Owen Bailey
Robbie Gotts
George Broadbent
Darren Robinson (loan if L1)
Harry Clifton
Sam Straughan-Brown (loan)

Wingers:
Luke Molyneux
Hakeeb Adelakun
Glenn Middleton

Centre Forward:

Released/allowed to leave whichever league:
James Maxwell
Tom Nixon
Matty Pearson
Bobby Faulkner
Ben Close
Zain Westbrook
Joe Sbarra
Jordan Gibson
Kyle Hurst
Billy Sharp
Brandon Hanlan

A lot of work to do but then we did after a whole summer and winter of recruitment somehow leave ourselves with a large looking L2 side. The good players we do have I think a few of them could be very very good tbf.

Gibson - how many times do we have to say "he's a good player but doesn't show it enough", "too inconsistent" blah blah blah!
If his contract is up this summer it's time he went, let's not make the same old mistakes.
One thing for sure it looks like another re-building job.

I agree regarding Gibson.... half arsed most weeks and then bags a couple of goals when they are put on a plate for him..

All the above yes. Senior I would keep. Broadbent, let’s remember he has just come back from injury. Hanlan does offer something. He needs game time. Imagine how he will feel being overlooked by a near 40 year old striker.
I feel we need to blood our younger players to. Be part of the squad etc.
I agree with Gibson. He needs to go.  Middleton, I was so excited with this signing but again not really given lots of game time
we are all good from the sidelines but we don’t see behind the scenes

Wow.

Rupee, you have just let one of division two's top defenders go for nothing, some other clubs would be delighted.
And seriously, have you actually seen some of that list play?

We would obviously have to sign another right back. I haven't kept a single centre forward either.

Nixon isn’t very good (fitness issues also). We need better, more reliable cover for Sterry, that is obvious. Sterry has fitness issues himself (shoulder?) so a new right back who acts as less of/no drop off to his quality is important.

What other clubs would be delighted? We keep hearing this from you so do tell? He’s been on loan at the worst club in the football league  no club is arsed about him mate, just yourself.

Nothing against Faulkner himself but he isn’t going to be playing games for us. I know you’ve seen him in some Sunday league games and reserve games but that doesn’t change his status here. Let him go attempt to build a career at another club and see how far he can get. Wish him all the best.

And yes, of course of course I have seen some of that list play

I would release practically every OOC player and transfer list a few obvious ones which are still under contract, one being Nixon.

Good job we aren’t tasked as a pair to make the decisions then as I ain’t for budging on Nixon.

I’d argue he’s 24 in the summer so coming to that age where he’ll have to play every week to really improve much, that isn’t going to happen is it? He hasn’t ran Sterry close for the position despite his injury woes and a centre back has been preferred there over him.

I’ve toyed between whether I would keep Senior or not and landed on the opposite view with him. He isn’t good enough to be first choice in this league longish term I don’t think but he has got in and kept the position with a few MOTM contender performances, looks a better defender than Nixon does on the other side and imo offers more going forward too.

That’s a long winded way of me saying Senior has stepped up a level from what he was showing last season, Nixon hasn’t.

I agree with sharp finishing as a player however I would offer him a coaching role.
