Let's talk about the Barnsley game
« on March 17, 2026, 11:28:27 pm by selby »
After a real fighting point at Bolton we go to our old adversaries Barnsley who really will be looking at the season as a bit underwhelming and should be at least challenging strongly for a play off place once again with the squad they have got.
In Kelly, McGoldrick, and Cleary they have on their day some of the best players in the division, and a good core of other players who have not shown the consistency required to challenge as yet this season, which with the squad is something of a failure.
We will be looking to carry on our upturn in results based on a solid defence in recent games tonight's game our best defensive display of the season especially in the members of the back line who to a man were at the top of their game, especially in our own area where we gave nothing away, and with everyone working hard off the ball Bolton found it hard to get momentum and behind our defence.
Repeat that performance and we the supporters could be in for a good game to watch, and send a message our that we deserve to be in division 1, and are no longer just here to make the numbers up and whipping boys as we were beginning to look like around Christmas time.
With local bragging rights at stake this hopefully could be a very good game to watch, both sides containing players who on their day can be exciting and are capable of turning a game in an instant.
A lot on the game, especially for us if we are to look to really pull away from the relegation positions, and the set of players who are the most focussed and calm playing the game and not the occasion could carry the day, lots to talk about, lots to look forward to and discuss, please have your say.

They have lost only once at home this year, a run of 9 matches. Interestingly though they have conceded in every single one of those games. They last kept a clean sheet at home way back on 22 November. You would think we have a chance of at least getting a goal.

I have seen loads of games over the years between these two sides and have always thought of them as the one true local Derby we play in.
There has always been very little between the teams even when one side has been in a much stronger position in the league, the games have mostly been very tight affairs with both sets of supporters keen to get one over the other.
Despite playing many times the win difference is negligible reflecting the challenge both sides show to each other and the competitiveness of the games, and the usual reaction of the crowds to any contentious decision and tackle is usually more animated than in other games against other sides as the Doolan tackle in a game so long ago and is still a subject of disgust with the Barnsley fans shows, and the Coppinger fouls still a subject of discussion with some of our supporters.
It can be the best game of the season for a number of reasons, Let's hope this game lives up to it.

A match at Barnsley I always remember was the game in 2013 when John Ryan resigned after the game following the Sequentia Capital malarky... from memory, I think that was a 0:0 affair...

It's the 4-0 win at Belle Vue that I always remember - it was the first meeting after the Doolan 'tackle' I think so there was a bit of bad blood with their bench and fans winding McPhail up (Doolan's gonna get you) and Doolan ended up scoring and did a knee slide in front of their bench. The good old days!! We seemed to regularly come out on top around that time, not quite so much recently!

We're tackling the Dingles when they are at a lull in their form, with a better defensive show we can hopefully produce the goods up front to get a 2-0 win.

Game that sticks in my memory was the 4-1 defeat there when the erm machine got sent off. Cruising 1-0 at HT, they go down to 10 & then Cambell-Ryce had 40 minutes I bet he still remembers well now.

I was at that game with my 6 fingered Barnsley mate. Was in the home end and living it up... even more so when DM got sent off and then the sh*t hit the fan - I got some right ribbing...

Not been active on here for well over a year. I hope he’s well.

Barnsley are wobbling at the moment, got a good chance for us to go there and beat them and bring home 3 points.

Connell and Yoganathan are also good players in midfield.

Cleary was superb in the reverse fixture but then again Grant decided to put Grehan at RB in one of the biggest mismatches we’ve seen this year. Him v Sterry should be a fun battle.

They are one of the best attacks and worst defences in the league. I fancy us here for a 2-3 away win.

Sterry has a lot on his plate with Cleary if he is on it, he ran the Liverpool defence ragged in a cup match televised.

Clearly they're better going forward than defensively.  Mcgoldrick is obviously a big player for them.  I really hope Hanlan is fit as his pace will cause problems.  I'd then like to see Adelakun go wide left as Mols just plays much better when we have that shape.

Kelly is a threat also with his driving runs. Surprised they are not higher in the league with the players they have.

They will be higher if they win their games in hand.

McCann has said he’s not 100%. Rest him. We can get a point here without him and Port Vale Tuesday is a huge chance at 3 points.

The Mols thing might be a smoke and mirrors plot too.

McCann never likes to give any injury news away but Mols looked spent against Luton and he still played x2 90 mins Saturday / Tuesday after that.

Haks often played RW in his Scunthorpe days, could be an option.

Worst option ever would be playing Middleton on the right

Player minutes are monitored to within an inch of their lives at all levels now. I’d be interested to see what medical say about the utilisation of Mols and Bailey. Feels like there has been a drop off in their performance of late and they have played a huge amount of minutes.

I could never understand their involvement in the JPT games. Perfect time for them to rest. Even though they didn’t start games the whole match day process, late nights after games etc takes its toll combined with the minutes they did play.

Maybe they are both machines and all the numbers  remain where they should be.

He is absolutely dreadful on the right. The fact he’s started multiple cup games there is pretty bewildering.

I would put Hanlon on the right and Gibson down the middle with haks on the left
