Rochdale vs York

Fair old scrap going off at the top of the National League table. York got turned over by Gateshead the other night and Rochdale let a 2 goal lead slip against Scunny last night. Rochdale 3 points clear but York have a 20+ goal difference over them. They play each other last game of the season in more than likely a winner takes all scenario.

Soft spot for York so hoping they come up trumps!

Yep. Bit of a shocker from Louis Jones as well for Barlows goal. Wasn’t done many favours with the poor ball back but evidently gets caught in 2 minds.

Rochdale will win the league, that last game will have nothing on it i bet. However, both have favourable fixtures left so you never know.

Something extra to potentially throw into the mix, Declan Howe is currently on loan at Altrincham from Scunny, they play York on the 6th. If he’s still at Alty he’ll be up against his brother, Callum.

Always had a soft spot for York City. I remember we had some tremendous battles with them in the 83/84 season when we were both promoted. I hope they win go up.

One of the worst grounds I've ever been to, Bootham Crescent. Only went once and it was cold, cramped, stank of piss and we got beat 1-0. We ended up relegating them at Belle Vue later in the season and winning the league, so did get revenge, but it was a miserable afternoon of togger.  Haven't been to the new ground but not a team I look at fondly because of that day!

One of the worst grounds I've ever been to, Bootham Crescent. Only went once and it was cold, cramped, stank of piss and we got beat 1-0. We ended up relegating them at Belle Vue later in the season and winning the league, so did get revenge, but it was a miserable afternoon of togger.  Haven't been to the new ground but not a team I look at fondly because of that day!

I was at the 1-1 there in 83/84, still queueing to get in when York got a penalty. Could just see through the turnstile to the middle of the penalty area.  From the away fans noise and player reactions, I could tell Peacock saved it..

I could be wrong but was that game played on a Sunday, which was quite unusual at the time?

Ditto, i worked in York for quite a few years, really good times with a good set of lads,.

Very much like ourselves they've had some bad times to work through, but looks like their fortune has changed big style, would be good to see them back in the league.

Glad you said this, I had a fond recollection of going to Ye Olde Star Inn for what I thought was Sunday dinner and a couple of pints before the match. I thought it must have been a dream as I was convinced Sunday games were still a long way off

York had a striker called Keith Walwyn who is one of the best, if not the best, lower league striker that I’ve ever seen. Fast, strong, brave and with a true eye for goal. He was exceptional. I don’t think he’s with us anymore unfortunately.

I also remember the lad who walked from Donny to York after a night out and arrived just in time for kick off covered in filth and mud. He may have been a mate of Oslo.

I’m pretty sure that Rovers were the first team to play at York after the tragic death of their striker David Longhurst during their previous home game. Think Rovers fans had collection buckets for his family.

A mate of mine called Malc Redfern was at Rovers intermediates and then later played with Keith Welwyn, possibly at Winterton. The players there nicknamed him Huggy Bear after the character in Starsky and Hutch. He was very good at non league and lower league level.

Stuart Mell came in to replace him to much moaning and groaning on a jam packed open terrace. Of course he scored the winner. An earlyish season game where plenty went away thinking we were the real deal and were going to do something that season. And we did.

Yeah that's always stuck with me. As a Rovers fan in the 90's Belle Vue used to come in for some right pastings from away fans. Yet when we went to York in 03/04 as many have said, you're just basically pissing round the back of a wall. Later that season I ended up in the away end at BV when the fans got moved round for the games with smaller away followings and the away toilets seemed pretty much the same as the home toilets!

Yes, HA, I was at that game with the collection buckets for DL. We were top of the league with 15 points from 5 games. They were bottom with 1 point from 2 games.

They hammered us 3-1.
