That “lager top” reference reminds me of the first time I was darn sarf as a young adult.  Bloke next to me at the bar asks for “bitter tops”.

I’m thinking, that’s called shandy where I come from, and did nowt to disprove any preconceptions of southerners!

I was working away, staying in a hotel near Cheltenham, full of contractors. One of them, a proper chirpy Cockley, full of himself. I was sat at the bar, supping my Guinness, he comes up & orders two pints of lager shandy & a lager tops, swagging about & throwing a note on the bar. The barmaid must have been barely eighteen, she put him right on his place "so, three pints of shandy then?" Everyone laughed, he was gutted, whilst sheepishly re-itterating his order.

Another time, in a boozer in London, a bloke ordered three different pints of premium lagers for him & his pals, & then asked for tops in em all.....
It's a thing of mine, as TfE well knows.
