Club nickname
« on March 03, 2010, 10:36:09 am by WheatleyRover »
Whats your preferred nickname for the club and which do you think should be our main nickname

The Vikings
The Rovers
Donny

I prefer The Vikings, also i think we should have a Viking mascot instead of a dog and would be better branding for the club

Interestingly enough, I've had many friends in the past ask us if we are called the Vikings, because of the logom the Vikettes etc. I always say no, we're the Rovers, but we do push the vikings alot aswell when you think about it?

I think The Vikings suits our club well going through hard times we have, we allways will have the nicknames the rovers and be called Donny but our main one i think should be The Vikings it has character, to me the rovers isnt a proper nickname and is not very distinguished.
When you say the rovers to someone there not going to think oh Doncaster Rovers they will be thinking which rovers, Blackburn Rovers, Bristol Rovers who Shamrock Rovers lol the last one was a joke
I think it would be a better branding of the club!

Well this is the VIKING supporters co-operative?  :silly:

I have always wanted us to have The Vikings as our official nickname because its more unique. We will always be related to Rovers and Donny as its in our name and town.\"Rovers\" is linked with several clubs and \"Donny\" is the nickname linked with everything Doncaster not just DRFC.Both will always be linked to us but \"Vikings\" is not universally used for us and many of our fans and away fans are unaware of it at all.I think a good nickname should be unique and not part of the clubs name already,Nicknames like United,The U's,Forest,City and Palace are boring and are probably just \"NAMES\" not \"NICKNAMES\".Good nicknames for me are like The Gas,The Addicks,The Toffemen,The Trotters,The Minstermen and The Canaries which are more unique to the Club itself. So My vote is for \"The Vikings\".Infact would this make a good poll to put up on here? What do you think Moderators?.

Aren't the Palace nicknamed the Eagles, and previously the Glaziers?  Shows nicknames are not premanent, a bit like the Black Cats, perhaps Rovers is the best choice, though I am fairly ambivolent and would go with the Vikings.

Yes your right Hounslow,Their nickname is The Eagles and thats my point,Fans use the name Palace how we use Rovers,so our Nickname should be The Vikings?

Maybe someone can think of a Song for the us to sing using the vikings nickname in it?Many people on here have said we should have a song known to be ours not shared or copied with other clubs. This would help spread the use of The Vikings nickname with the Supporters.

The Vickings, as it is on the badge, would work if we had a mascot like the Sheff Utds Pirate (Captain Blade), we could have the vicking, 'Victor The Vicking'.

But we are the Rovers and have a dog.

How many Rovers are there??? How many Vickings are there???

Thats what I remember, but sounds a bit Lowryesque. Maybe combine that with the Viking thing and we can be the Danish Pastries? It always goes down well for me.

Seriously, The Vikings has to be the one, and the Beserkers the name for an ultra type section. Several drums, horns, flares and platforms, glitter eyeliner.... oooer...

A bit cross threaded, but getting bums on seats would be massively aided by getting an ultra type section together. First stop on that road HAS to be a designated section in the ground. And for all the farts who'd moan about being moved, or a bit of noise - get a life and some ear plugs, this would be serious progress.

What about the Butterscotch Vikings!  :silly:

The club could make use of the viking more aswell with things like calling the Early bird season ticket the Early Viking season ticket and other things like that. The sale of plastic viking hats was popular previously and help put money into the club.As they keep telling us every little helps no matter how small.

I remembermy dad calling us the Butterscotch Boys, apparently it used to be made in Donny - certainly a rival to the Toffees!

i too remember the Pirate. Jolly Rover i think he was called.

obviously Pirates and Vikings evoke Doncaster's seafaring heritage of which we can all be proud.

i have mentioned this on here before, but Donny Dog is a survivor from the Doncaster Evening Post and he used to have a newspaper in his mouth.

now, 'Vikings' creates images of violence, trampling over innocent people, burning, raping and pillaging. i can almost hear 'Donny boyz, we are here, Shaag your women and Drink your beer' as an accompanying theme tune to the Viking hordes as they swept across Rotherham and Barnsley in the 1970's.

I like the Vikings it is a good word to shout.

As for Butterscotch. Parkinsons Butterscotch was made in Donny along with Nuttals Mintoes but both went many years ago hence \"The Butterscotch Boys\" much prefer the Vikings

Hear hear Lord Farquaad! That's the name I always wanted too. That or 'The Phoenix Stadium' anyway. Says it all.

As for Parkinsons Butterscotch - it was bloody lovely stuff. Really, really, REALLY good.

Belle Vue was renamed The Earth Stadium but everyone knew it was still Belle Vue, and it's the same with The Rovers, we'll always be 'The Rovers' to me.

never liked the idea of the Earth Stadium. Glad we resisted the idea of calling the Keepmoat the Moon Stadium, that would imply it had no atmosphere.

i've been thinking of a new nickname which plays on our 'pub team' persona while also making reference to the town's obesity problem, ladies and gentlemen of the forum, i give you...............

THE BEERGUTS

Fans could also feel part of this. with a minute to go before kick-off, all those wearing XL, XXL and XXXL sized red and white hoops could expose their little tummies to the sound of 'compare the beergut, dot com'
...simples.

has to be the vikings for me. with all the history theres so many avenues it can be used for such as if we somebody could find some old viking war song or something to sing that could sound epic and be very unique to us. additionally to promote the club as mentioned before with the sale of horned hats.

we could even come out to one of the more scarier parts of this

All the other clubs in the area have proper nicknames Barnsley the tykes, Sheff U The Blades, sheff wed the owls and Rotherham the millers, Its not like we have never been called The Vikings but never used it as our official nickname, Do you know anywhere you can buy them viking hats i want one?

When I worra lad Barnsley were alus known as T'Colliers.
Fans of Rovers could call themselves 'Vikings', whilst the team remains 'Rovers'.
The 'Toon army' follow the 'Magpies' likewise.
'Wednesites' follow the 'Owls' likewise.

A bit like this?

This is \"Max\" the Wigan Rugby League mascot. Officially a warrior rather than a viking, but not sure what the difference would be?????

Perhaps we could have something similar, but without the gay moustache
