DVD repairs
« on April 12, 2010, 12:13:08 pm by Mike H »
Since you lot are the fountains of all knowledge, I'm hoping that you can help me.

I've got a Panasonic DVD Recorder that I was given as a present a couple of Christmases ago.

I've not used it all that heavily, but it's now causing problems.

Basically, the machine will not recognise any disks that I put in - whether DVD re-writables, DVD-Rs or a pre-recorded/shop bought DVD. It also means that whilst I bought a lens cleaner, that just whirs and whizzes for a while, then doesn't recognise it.

Currys reckoned that they don't bother with repairs since \"they're so cheap\", but surely there must be somewhere that could sort it out without it costing the earth (or more than it's worth in the first place).

Does anyone out there know anyone/company that does such repairs at a reasonable rate?

And before RTR comes in with the wise-cracks, yes, I've turned it off and switched it back on several times!

There is that place on Bentley High Street that does TV and video repairs.  You could try them.

I reckon the bloke from Currys was about right. I bought a couple of DVD players for about £25 each from Asda a while back and never had any problems with them at all.

No idea what it would cost to repair, but a new player plus warranty for £25 is probably a better option?

Don't know too much about them, but it sounds as if the laser just needs adjusting, its not particularly difficult but perhaps a bit awkward/fiddly google(sorry easysearch  ;) ) \"adjust dvd laser\" plenty of info out there.
I managed to do it on my lads original x box years ago.
At worst you'll stuff it right up at best it might work again

Its not a player, its a recorder, Neil.  Even so, a quick look on amazon finds that a decent replacement new (the LG one) is £115, so a repair might be a few quid cheaper.
