I am a new user and I want to write something for Grimsby Town about what we sjhould do to get out of the BSP first time round

what is the magic formula for doing so?

Wasting your time asking round here, Rovers were in there for five years, and it took a hell of a lot of effort from fans and board alike to get the club moving in the right direction again. Good luck.

Let's put it this way londonmariner, you are in a far better position than Rovers when they first went down. At least you still have 11 players! If you really want to know how it is done you would be better talking to Luton fans than us to be honest.

Hi LM. The Conference is quite a good standard. It's no pushover that's for sure. There are plenty of players with league experience in it. All but 6 (I think) of the sides in it mow are full time. Clearly though, it's more muscle, strength and commitment that wins things. Fancy dans will be booted up in the air. For me you need phsyical strength all over the pitch, someone who can score (obviously!) and some level of finesse in midfield. Don't expect to be playing like Barcelona - play like Accrington and you'll be ok. Play like Accrington with a bit more skill and you can go up.

One other thought: I really enjoyed the Conference. No aggro anywhere. Loads of new grounds to visit (and you get the lucky bonus of not having to go to Stevenage too), buy a beer in the ground, you can actually STAND UP and you can usualy walk around the ground. It's pretty friendly, the footer is ok and as an ex League club you've always got a chance of winning something.  The refs are tools mind.

I think that the refs are tools no matter what division Bob! Grimsby will be pushing for promotion so long as they play like they have done for the past few weeks. It doesn't take a fortune to be successful in the Conference, you do need commitment from players though.

Were n`t that the game when Sutherland t**tted their striker, West I think it was around the penalty spot defending a corner and ran as far away from their striker as he could and then the ref missed it. I think it was the same game that Hume got sent off after about 5 mins

Aye, that were the one. Colin West must have been shitting teeth for a month after that match. I reckon Sutherland landed at least 3 left handers on his fizhog that night. I wonder if Sutherland and the ref were in the same Masonic lodge, cos there is no way that the ref couldn't have seen them punches. Either that or the ref just babbed himsen when it came to thinking about getting the yellow card out.

There is an argument that some teams in the Conference are better than in league 2, that's probably right.  It's not a bad league.  Unfortunately there's some awful teams too.

I enjoyed the Conference years too.

Not sure about the \"no aggro\" bit Bob - arguably more \"active\" than many other seasons from what I observed - combination of less experienced policing, bans not being applicable in the Conference at the time, opponents wanting a crack at what they perceived were a \"big\" team.

That night at Nene Park was superb, despite the scoreline.  Rovers filled that stand, and the coppers were uneasy all game especially as most of us were pished as newts.  Started supping in the Sal at 4pm, and a quick detour to the off licence at the top of Carr House Road yielded a weird selection of miniature bottles of spirits and cans of cheap lager.  Went down in my mate's Audi Quattro (yes, just like Ashes to Ashes, but for real!) in record time down the (pre speed cameras) A1.  Sutherland's punch on West at the far post, then his getaway to the near post before the ref saw who did it was priceless. Hume was unlucky to get sent off - it was typical of the challenges he put in at that time, more clumsy than malicious.

I have to pinch myself these days that we are where we are, but I would never swap the experiences we had in the conference days for anything.

A belting night that was. The score didn't matter. Not only were the Rovers there, still playing, but they had just immense characters in there too. I honestly do think the Rovers support never shut up once that night. The noise just went on and on and on. As for Psycho Sutherland, what a man! I'd pay to watch him even now. One of my all time heroes he is. Better than Animal. Well, not as an actual player perhaps, but still just better!

Sign him up as your sub centre half. You'll never have as much fun again.

You will certainly need a couple of strong centre halves in there and someone to get you 20 plus goals (may sound obvious but how many did we try before we got Paul Barnes)

As previously said a squad prepared to give 100% every game for 90 minutes.

There are quite a few decent teams in the top half of the conference (will always be that to me) and it won't be easy for both Grimsby and Darlington.

Not sure what your current squad is like as not seen much of Grimsby for a couple of seasons but looking at your more recent results they did seem to put a bit of a fight up but just a bit too late so maybe you have some players there already that will do ok. Try to keep a few of your experienced players.

It took us five years and then it was play off route so it is tough to get out of.

Are you likely to stick with Neil Woods?

its really mixed with Woods
some say he had enough time to save us-he was a poor appointment in the first place
however Newell left us in a terrible state. Players unfit and in the pubs etc so he has done well but probably out of his depth. I would only get rid of him if we have a genuinelly better manager in place

Personally I'd stick with Neil Woods if I were on the Grimsby Board. As many have stated, the Conference is easily the hardest division we had to get out of so you need a manager who understands the club, the town and most importantly the fanbase.
John Ryan in his infinate wisdom appointed Ian Snodin, a man who he knew would unite the fans behind him, win, lose or draw. Then when Snod could take us no further the fans pretty much demanded Dave Penney got the job, after a caretaker period.
So, I suppose the moral of the story is you need to appoint a Grimsby legend so why not Neil Woods? You'll enjoy the Conference, you may not believe that now but it's back to the good old days of football when fans have a laugh and a pint together, terracing and blood and guts football. I loved it but don't ever want to go back again!!
