SHEFFIELD United are facing a major dilemma over the future of Billy Sharp, their hugely popular striker, ahead of the forthcoming transfer window.

Sharp returned to Bramall Lane towards the end of last season following a prolific spell on loan with Championship rivals Doncaster Rovers.

But, as he prepares to enter the final year of his contract with Kevin Blackwell's side, United must decide whether to offer Sharp an extension or risk losing him for nothing when his deal expires at the end of the 2010/11 campaign.

Although some senior figures at the club would prefer to see the former Scunthorpe marksman handed one last chance to force his way into the manager's plans, the financial implications of doing so could influence both parties' thinking.

Sharp, who progressed through the youth ranks at Shirecliffe, commanded a £2m transfer fee when he returned from Glanford Park.

Having negotiated a substantial sell-on clause when they allowed him to move to Lincolnshire, United are believed to have actually spent around £1.5m acquiring his services.

However, despite scoring 15 goals in 35 appearances for Sean O'Driscoll's side, his value on the open market is likely to decrease significantly as he approaches the end of his present deal.

Blackwell, who saw his attacking options diminish this week when Henri Camara moved to Greece, was giving nothing away when questioned about Sharp recently.

\"He's back here and is part of Sheffield United, nothing different,\" the manager said.

However, a number of Championship clubs are preparing to test United's resolve if fresh terms can not be agreed.

United, who are also holding talks with Chris Morgan, Nick Montgomery, Stephen Quinn, Paddy Kenny and Richard Cresswell, will attempt to resolve the situation before preparations for the new campaign begin in earnest.

They are scheduled to unveil their list of retained players later today.

I'm struggling to see what the big fuss is. We will NOT be signing Sharp. We couldn't afford his combined fee/wages last season. Meanwhile, his value has gone up after his season with us, and it appears that our income has gone down, given that our attendances were well down last season.

There will be clubs with far deeper pockets than ours lining up to take him on. We are simply NOT a club that can compete for the services of proven high-level Championship players. We have to pick up the lower league prospect, the decent pro who has lost his way or the up and coming loan star.

If I'm wrong it'll be a pleasant surprise, but the rest of you should stop hoping for the moon, or face a big disappointment.

I agree with BST, it would be massively surprising if we bought him.

Thats sounds like Sheff utd management explaining to their fans why they might sell him for less than most would expect them to get for him.\"risk losing him for nothing when his deal expires at the end of the 2010/11 campaign\",\"his value on the open market is likely to decrease significantly as he approaches the end of his present deal\" and \"Having negotiated a substantial sell-on clause when they allowed him to move to Lincolnshire,United are believed to have actually spent around £1.5m acquiring his services\".Are they preparing to sell him soon?Problem is There is a number of Championship clubs interested. Then again its the Star and who know how much poetic licence has been used?
