Those are the categories, but what are the actual awards, Nathan?  Is it Sheff & Hallamshire FA sponsored?

It's the Doncaster Sports Awards open to all sports. More details on the Keepmoat Stadium website.

Nice to see Eric get a fully deserved award, he was my gaffer at the club in the community scheme in its early days 20 years ago, and the community team and what they do means everything to him :)

AND THE WINNERS ARE …..

Boxing and bowls took the top two accolades at the One Call Doncaster Sports Awards at the Keepmoat Stadium last night (May 21).

Boxer, Jamie McDonnell, aged 23, walked away with the Sports Personality of the Year award to add to his British and Commonwealth Bantamweight Title.

He worked extremely hard to achieve this European title which is a much deserved reward for his efforts.

The young boxer is quickly making a name for himself, notching up wins and taking the titles. He is set to defend his European title next month at the Doncaster Dome.

Indoor bowls champion Helen Wood, took the Disabled Athlete of the Year title. Helen has achieved a great deal as an individual and team player for Doncaster and Yorkshire.

She has played indoor bowls competitively for ten years. She was recently crowned Yorkshire Ladies National Singles winner, a title made all the more impressive by the fact that Helen competes as a wheelchair bowler against able-bodied opponents.

Other winners on the evening were:

Niall Gibson walked away with the Junior Sports Personality of the Year award. Sixteen year old Niall already has over ten years under his belt in his chosen sport of Taekwondo. He has represented Great Britain at both the European and World Championships. He was British Champion in 2009 and recently took gold in the Creti Cup in Germany.

The Team of the Year award went to Balby Sports College Girls Under 18s who won the national cup for the first time in the school’s history making it the first time a Yorkshire team took the title.

Swimming fans will be delighted that Ben Pacey is the winner for Outstanding Sporting Moment. Ben, who used to play water polo for Great Britain, had to give up sports and have a bone marrow transplant following a leukaemia diagnosis.

He has since been raising awareness of the importance of organ and bone marrow donation and went on to win seven gold medals at the British Transplant Games. His sporting moment was winning gold in Australia where he represented the British team at the World Transplant Games. Ben came home with give gold, a sliver and a bronze medal, breaking three transplant games records along the way.

Coach of the Year went to Sean O’Driscoll, who has had another good season in the Championship. He has done a great job with the team and is very popular with the fans.

Bessacarr Football Club won the title of Amateur Sports Club of the Year. The club, which was formed in 1981, has been awarded the County FA Charter Standard and recently received the highest accolade possible by becoming a FA Charter Standard Club and Community Level, less than 500 clubs have this award nationally.

A fifteen year old swimmer from xx won the Hope for the Future Award. Max Litchfield is ranked number two in his age group in Britain. His commitment to the sport of swimming is exceptional. He trains for approximately 18 hours a week which has helped him qualify for thirteen events at this summer’s National Championships he is definitely one to watch.

Professional Club of the Year was won for the second year running by the Doncaster Rovers Football Club. Promotion to the Championship in 2008 was a phenomenal success for the club and marked a return to the second tier of English football for the first time in 50 years.

They have managed to hold their own and retain their place against tough competition and have made football fans in the borough’s dreams come true by not only reaching the Championship and more importantly staying there.

Sports Business of the Year was won by Doncaster Rovers Community Sports and Education Foundation (RITC). The foundation provide a vital service in the community including school visits, coaching disabled and disadvantaged youngsters and encouraging young people to take part in sport.

The honour of the Lifetime Achievement Award went to Eric Randerson who has worked for RITC for over 20 years taking the foundation from strength to strength. He is renowned for putting in above and beyond and always going the extra mile. His dedication to the foundation is incredible.

Odette Stringwell won the Unsung Hero award, voted for by local residents. Odette was nominated for her boundless energy and enthusiasm to help the Ultimate Taekwondo club in Armthorpe, members have said they would be in a real dilemma if they did not have Odette by their side. She attends classes, helps with the younger members of the club and never complains or seeks reward for the time and effort she puts into making sure the club and logistics run smoothly.

Shane Chalmers, General Manager of the Keepmoat Stadium said: “I thought it would be hard to top last year’s awards but we certainly did.

“The evening was fantastic and we are so proud to have been able to bring together so many talented sports people from across Doncaster.

“The fact that we had more than double the amount of entries this year and that the judging was such a difficult task is a real testament to the range and quality of sports and sporting people we have in the borough.

“I’m thrilled for all those who were nominated, shortlisted and awarded titles. A huge thank you to all who have been involved in this event. It has definitely been something to make Doncaster proud.”

Dean Andrews, star of the BBCs Ashes to Ashes who gave out a number of awards said: “It has been a great night and it is really good to see people from the community getting recognition for their efforts.

“Someone here said to me that they couldn’t believe all the talent that was in one room and they were right.”
