I'm wondering if this piece of kit will work on my tv so the audio can be transmitted wirelessly to the garden for instance?
The tv has a usb port and the dongle is a usb connection but being technically inept I have no idea if it will work or not?

Absolutely no chance whatsoever. The usb port on your TV will either be a port for an engineer to plug his laptop into or a media file point, so you can view digital photos or DIVX movies on your telly.
However, if you have a headphone socket on your TV, you could just plug in an FM transmitter designed for an MP3 player, and use a normal radio to pick up the broadcast. Not sure if the range will be sufficient though.
