iPhone Rant
« on July 20, 2010, 11:54:40 pm by BillyStubbsTears »
iPhone has gone tits up, so I hit the \"restore defaults\" button in ITunes. Sez, \"We will now donwload the latest version of iPhone software and then restore your phone.\"

Starts downloading - a 0.5Gb file! And dipshit here, living in the wilds, has an internet connection that struggles to reach 500kbits/s on a good day.

By the time that has downloaded, the phone will have de-com-bas**rd-posed.

Oh aye, and this wonderful software update fixes one bug apparently \"The number of bars indicating signla strength don't always show up accurately.\" I wonder how I have survived until now.

Changed my mind on the Death Penalty. I'd now gleefully garotte that smug t**t Job with an iPhone USB cable.

Maybe you could download it to your pc via a landline and then transfer it to the i thing? Dunno if'd work but if it did it'd be cheaper.

Knew there was a reason I don't do these I things.

Download the update via iTunes and sync with your iPhone.
I'm on my 3rd iPhone now due to faults, and this one is going back aswell as the cover on the back is cracking, again!

No Bob. It the LANDLINE internet connection here that's 500kb/s!

I mean, I only live 1km from the centre of f**king Sheffield, so I guess I should expect a tin can and string level of IT connectivity.

TeleWest were digging up the pavement on the other side of the road when the dot.com bubble burst in 1999 and all new investment in the fibre optic network stopped overnight. So the old lass over the road has got 20MB download speed and is up all night having real-time cyber w**ks with folk from Micronesia - full audio, HD webcam, everything, whilst for me it's quicker to walk to a client's office and shout through their letterbox than send them an e-mail with an attachement.

'kin free market system eh? Bag of shite.

I take it you're miles from the nearest BT exchange then with download speeds like that?

Aye. That shining light of Thatcherite privatisation, BT, decided in their wisdom to connect our street to an exchange that's halfway to f**king Huddersfield.

Couple of ways to speed it up, if you're not already doing so.
Make sure you're running it through the master socket.
Avoid extension cables
Make sure you have filters on all your phone sockets
Used wired, not wirless
Use up to date web browsers
Phone up your ISP and rant at them. They could be throttling your bandwith, they've done this to me in the past and I wasn't best pleased.

Aye. Ta for the advice, but all tried already. The problem is that we are about 6km from the exchange, with something close to 100,000 other punters further upstream.

As for calling BT for a civillzed chat about it, they refuse to even offer us ADSL connection as, in their words, \"you obviously live in a very rural area according to our assessment of the bandwidth on your line.\" After calming pointing out that I could see the centre of the 4th biggest city in the UK from my bedroom window, the exchange of views made this one (http://www.wibble.co.uk/media/bt.wav) sound like a discussion over who was to bring the angle cakes to the next Church of England Synod meeting.

I saw the update your iPhone in iTunes and did this last week. Took about 2hrs to update. Piss all wrong with the phone but did it anyway. Not sure what it's actually done to my phone, but works exactly the same.

This of course, is of no help to you.

Try downloading emogicons for free, lot's of smiley faces and symbols, that might make you laugh.

Try downloading Roll Down and beating my record of 218.

Roll Down? That sounds like something to do with the foreskin, there really is an app for everything these days. unfortunately as my iphone was stolen a couple of weeks ago I'll have to stick to the old fashioned method for now!

Mugs, all of yers.

Billy, are you a Sky customer?  If so, try to find out if you can get Sky broadband.  Sky put their own kit in the exchanges, so even though you might be miles away, you might only be sharing with a thousand users or so, instead of 100,000.  Rhis is how Sky get the speeds they do.  With Tiscali, my line could just about manage 2mb/s on a good day, but with Sky I get 14.5mb/s constantly.

Sky have n`t got their own kit in every exchange, they tried to tell me I could have Broadband for free until they realised they did n`t have Sky kit in my exchange so therefore I had to pay £17 month if I wanted it!

Ta Rob. Wrth looking at.

That said, I guess everything is changing in South Yorkshire with the Digital Region project. I'm assuming that our street will finally (FINALLY!) be connected the to fibre optic network. Guaranteed 25Mb speeds so I undestand.

Yet another EU-funded project helping to develop our county after decades of neglect from Westminster.

Have to say I'm not missing the slow internet speeds I got in Sheffield.  Now I'm living back with the parents for a bit and have internet problems again (because our provider is rubbish) but my old man won't change.

No.

Even this Government isn't so ideologically obsessed with cuts that it would chuck away hundreds of millions of pounds of EU funding and the chance to give one of the poorest areas in teh country an economic kick start for the sake of a £20million Yorkshire Forward grant.

My team are doing a load of wayleaves for access so that the infrastructure can be put in place for the Digital Region project.  Exciting days ahead.

Now, how about WIMAX?

Nah. It's the permissions various businesses have to get to put their poles, masts and whatnots in the front gardens, back agrdens, private property of some one or other to provide the luvverly service we're all on about. Can't be had without the right kit in place. And t'kit has to be in right place. which be my front garden or tours. Hence, have to get a 'wayleave. They try hard not to pay you out for it, but if you insist, and there's no alternative, they'll pay up.
